The junior missed the end of his high school season after transferring from Bloomington to Olympia. We caught up with Payton to speak with him about the move, his new grassroots team, and recruiting.
The 6’6” Olympia High School small forward made his debut with All-In/Young & Reckless at the NY2LA Basketball Association. The bouncy forward fits right in. Although he didn’t show a ton skill wise which is an area he will need to improve his athleticism is at such an elite level that he is effective on that alone. Payton hit the glass high pointing rebounds and had several second chance put backs. The transition game is his best asset offensively getting out in the open floor and finishing with ferocious slams. Defensively Payton moves well laterally and is a shot blocking presence coming out of nowhere to pin it against the glass. High major prospect without a doubt.
He spoke about the transfer from Bloomington to Olympia.
“It was a pretty good beginning of the season. Things started to get rocky, but it wasn’t too bad. I wasn’t really feeling things and it had nothing to do with basketball. It was a personal society kind of thing. The whole Bloomington as a core.”
How has he been with not playing in competitive games?
“I have been out of basketball since I moved from Bloomington. I haven’t played any up and down games. I have done individual workouts and team workouts.”
He says Kansas is a school that has shown some recent interest in him recruiting wise. Expect things to heat up in general more with recruiting this summer.
