You knew going into the game that International was going to have to rely upon that star freshman to do the heavy lifting but University was able to limit outside production and pulled off an easy opening round Sectional win, 62-34.
Led by David Howard early on, University was able to get some key jumpers and keep a lead heading out of the first quarter. After that, International was unable to really get anything going outside of the paint and Emerson Haliblieb’s rebounding took hold. Limiting second chance points was the difference in the middle part of the game and after some Connor Holly buckets, the game was all but over in the early part of the second half. With a matchup of Indianapolis Tindley on Friday, that could determine a possible 1A South contender.
Player of the Game:
David Howard – 6’4 SF – Junior
With the game being close early, Howard was a big reason why University started to take hold in the middle part of the game. He was a little more active than I usually see and that allowed him to grab some boards and hit some jump shots. He did almost all of his work in the early part of the game. You know Holly is going to step up and Haliblieb has been pretty good this year, if Howard can play like he did in the first part of the game, University could have a nice postseason run.
