The biggest jump comes between a prospects sophomore and junior years. That spring and summer is when “prospect” shows they can become legit “college player.” The potential has to turn into production. Our “Spring Storyline” for the class of 2018 is just that. Who will make the jump and take their game to the next level?
As of now in the class of 2018 there are many talented prospects, but far from any sure things after the top two. That duo is shooting guard Tim Finke (Champaign Central) and point guard Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park). Those two have the mix of potential and production on both the high school level as well as travel team circuit that project them as legit high major prospects.
After that duo honestly it is completely up for grabs! There are no prospects that are “sure fire” after them at any levels. You have productive guys that might not be as projectable long term. On the other hand there are projectable guys that haven’t produced. There are even prospects with potential that haven’t hardly seen minutes on the varsity level.
This is my favorite time to watch a player’s development. You see whether or not they are going to take that next step in their game or not. More often than not if they don’t at this time they never realize their full potential and level off as a prospect. If they do start to show flashes of that ability on a consistent basis they can fly up the charts.
In the spring and especially July college coaches will start paying more attention to prospects in the class of 2018. Although it isn’t a stellar class at this point only two guys in the class hold scholarship offers. This is partially due to the fact college coaches have been focusing their recruiting on finishing up in 2016 and identifying what guys they want to make pushes for in the 2017 class. In the spring they will be checking out many of these prospects for the first time and in July more seriously evaluating them.
Class of 2018 now is your time to step forward and put yourself on the map!
