This year got off to a rocky start but things changed quickly.
“At the beginning of the season we competed with high ranked teams,” Benton told NHR about the Governors season. “It was tough but it was a nice experience with my teammates and coaching staff.”
The Governors lost seven of their first eight and their schedule included games against four ranked out of state teams a couple ranked local squads.
Things turned around mid-year and the Governors won eight of their last nine earning another St. Paul City Conference title (shared with Central) and winning 16 games overall.
“One thing I’ll remember most about this season is when we went up and played in Bemidji. We were just having fun cracking jokes but most importantly playing basketball there.”
Benton was one of five Governors to average double figures as he scored ten a game (sophomore Lorenzo Smith also did). Now Benton is looking at playing college basketball and is waiting to see which schools will step forward with an opportunity.
“My game grew as senior by becoming a better leader and I have to work on ball handling and increase my vertical to get ready for college.”
