The 6-foot-5 Allendale power forward, doubles as a dominant defensive end and tight end during the fall, and has seen interest from Iowa, Tennessee, Michigan and others for his prowess on the gridiron.
He says playing college football is his dream, but he’s not completely ruling out basketball — one school has reached out to him about playing both at the next level.
“The only school that’s looking at me for basketball is Hope, and they’re looking at me to play football and basketball there. Which is really flattering that they would consider me to play both,” said Umlor.
“As of right now — I mean I love basketball — but football is really my dream, and the opportunities are just better right now for football. I’m not closing any doors for basketball yet. I’m only 16, I’m just not exactly sure yet. I have time to make a decision on what I want to do.”
Umlor prides himself as being a versatile threat on the hardwood. A guy that can do a little bit of everything.
“I rebound really well, and I’m versatile offensively. I can step out for a mid range, 3-pointer too, and I can bring up the ball, and have good vision,” he said. “I’ve had a game with seven assists, I’ve had a game with 21 points, and another game with 21 rebounds.”
In the past Umlor has played with Grand Rapids Storm for some grassroots tournaments. He says he’s unsure of what this spring and summer holds for him.
“I’m not really sure yet because I’ll have a lot of football stuff to do. I would love to (play with the Storm) more than anything. Everybody at the Storm is great and it’s a top-notch organization. They taught me so much about baseball — it’s awesome,” said Umlor.
“So, I would love to play with them again. I’m just unsure whether or not I will.”
