He got an early start in his rec league, where he began at age 6 when most would start at 7 or 8. Now coming off a season in which he averaged a double-double for Norfolk Academy, the 6-foot-10, 265+ pound sophomore is considered among the top big men in the nation.
Owning a massive frame which works well given his traditional, back-to-the basket style as a bruising big man; McCormack described himself as “the bull in the China shop” – “I just kind of man-handle everybody and get to the goal.”
Featured along with Keldon Johnson and Rasir Bolton on the roster of Team Loaded 15U – a top team on the Adidas gauntlet last summer, McCormack was immediately touted by division one schools such as Old Dominion, Penn State, NC State, and Virginia Tech, who were among the first to offer him scholarships. More recently, he’s taken visits to North Carolina, Xavier, Georgetown, Maryland, and VCU – all but the Tarheels have offered him at this point. The Duke Blue Devils have recently expressed interest, meaning another trip to “Tobacco Road” could be on the horizon.

“I just want to work hard, I never want to be overlooked because I was outworked,” McCormack stated. “I’m working on the 15 footer – working on my counter moves, left hand, everything just to expand my game.”
As a big man, he prides himself on being an accurate free throw shooter – “A lot of people don’t know I’m a phenomenal free throw shooter if I might say myself. A lot of bigs work on a lot of finishes around the rim, finishing and 1’s, but they don’t get that third basket cause they cant finish their free throw. That’s the thing I work on, when I get in the gym I shoot 100 free throws just to make sure I keep my touch.”
“Big Dave”, as he’s often referred to, has clearly shown the determination and desire to prepare himself for the next level. This is evident by his high rate of production, improved fitness, and humble, relaxed demeanor. Look for him to take the next jump this spring and summer with Team Loaded 17U.
