Things started off hot for Richmond on Thursday night. The Blue Devils came out firing and were able to quickly jump out to 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Of course, as Yale settled into the game, things did get more competitive. At the break, Richmond held a 30-22 lead.
In the second half, the two teams continued battling. Richmond was able to maintain the lead thanks to some big plays from D’Sean Hamilton, but in the final minutes, the Blue Devils had some trouble on the free throw line and in trying to contain Cody Kegley. As such, Yale was able to make the last few minutes pretty exciting.
All told, Richmond grabbed a 50-45 win over Yale.
Richmond
Anthony Tavnao, junior
A guard with decent size with a good amount of court awareness. Had a nice bucket in transition through contact and a smooth three early in the first quarter. In the second quarter, he made a great pass off a ball screen and dumped the ball over the defender to the roller. In the final minutes, he also had a huge block to keep Richmond ahead.
Stefan Fenwick, senior
He made a really nice steal after jumping a pass on the perimeter that ultimately got Richmond to the free throw line. With just seconds left, he also made the key free throw to put Richmond up multiple possessions to end the game.
Matthew Shoryank, senior
Nice feed inside to the backside for a bucket at the hoop. Made a three near the end of the first quarter.
D’Sean Hamilton, junior
Guard with decent athleticism that showed the ability to close out consistently and get to the rim. Although he’s still improving in his ability to finish, he was a consistent threat to get inside and showed consistent movement without the ball. He also made a huge block late in the third quarter when Yale had some momentum. Hamilton finished with 19 points.
Chase Churchill, sophomore
Made a nice three pointer in the second quarter. He finished with 11 points on the night.
Spencer Trapiss, senior
A strong forward that stayed committed defensively. Not only did he stay low, but also kept a wide stance and used his hands to disrupt ballhandlers.
Yale
Jordan Craig, 5-9 senior, G
Although he was a bit undersized inside, he made some major effort plays inside and continued to battle for loose balls on the boards for the majority of the night.
Cody Kegley, 5-11 senior, G
A guard with a decent combination of length and athleticism that has a real knack for making plays off the bounce and in transition. Not only can he get in the lane and shoot over defenders, but he also made some nice passes to teammates on the perimeter and displayed a decent outside shot. Additionally, he also had a few nice plays early on including a big block near the rim. Finished with 24 points on the night.
Derick Porrett, 5-11 sophomore, G/F
He showed some major effort and consistently fought for loose balls.
Luke McClelland, 5-11 junior, G
A stronger guard that doesn’t have elite length, but showed a decent vertical while rebounding and made a few nice plays through contact around the hoop. He also made some key plays in the second half to keep the ball low and play through Richmond’s pressure.
Cade Smeznik, 6-0 junior, F
A thin forward with some length that showed some range and the ability to create his own shot on the perimeter.
Andrew Charney, 5-10 sophomore, G
Showed a lot of effort in the game. Not only was he fighting for loose balls, but he was moving off the ball, closing out, and fighting through screens. He still is filling out and putting on weight, but showed some real energy. Late in the third quarter, he had a really nice drive off the perimeter.
Sean Koepf, 6-2 sophomore, G/F
On several key plays, he fought through contact inside and was able to get to the free throw line.
