Continue ReadingIn the second sectional semifinal contest at the Flora sectional we saw Teutopolis vs Mt. Carmel. Mt. Carmel is led by one of the better power forwards in the junior class Justin Carpenter along with some other young talent. A veteran T-Town squad was just too much to overcome as they advanced to the sectional final. Let’s look at the prospects in this one including some small school seniors and upside underclassmen.
PF Justin Carpenter (Mt. Carmel – 2017)
Without question the best prospect on the floor was this junior four man. He had trouble finishing at the rim on some shots he usually hits partially because of a wrap on his left hand, but showed a lot of potential. Carpenter stands at 6’8” and is starting to fill out with strength in his upper body. He is extremely mobile and his face up ability makes him very intriguing at the next level with the way the college game is going. One aspect he has greatly enhanced is his ball handling. For his high school team Carpenter plays almost a point forward at times bringing the ball up where he handles it tremendously well against pressure. Smooth with the ball. Also is a plus passer that shows more of a flare for this than we had seen in the past. Athleticism and toughness combination plays well on the glass as he high points rebounds and grabs them at a quality clip. As a scoring threat he likes to face up from the mid-post and make a quick move to get by his man to the hoop. Posts up strong on the block and makes quick moves. Didn’t have the touch he usually does in this one. Sound mid-range jump shooter. Defensively his length bothers opponents and has the mobility to switch on a guard when he has too. He had 13 points and 16 rebounds. I think he is definitely a low-major D1 kid in 2017 and with a strong summer could move up into the mid-major category.
PF Jackson Marcotte (Mt. Carmel – 2018)
Marcotte is the other half of Mt. Carmel’s young front line. He is a bit of a different player. At 6’7” Marcotte is thicker and has a strong body especially in his lower half. Not the greatest athlete he uses his raw strength around the hoop to score through his opponents. Plays physical in the post on both ends of the floor. Quality area rebounder. Has the ability to step out and knock down a shot every now and then, but it is not his go to game. The sophomore had 15 points and 5 rebounds.
PG Austin Rager (Mt. Carmel – 2019)
Rager is a 6’2” freshman point guard that has a rangy frame and is still very thin. Flashes ability to handle the ball in the open floor and is effective scoring mostly with runners. Can get in passing lanes defensively converting turnovers into points. As a lead guard he was shaky in this game making several risky passes which led to turnovers. He scored 12 points. Has size already and some projectablity. Needs to make better decisions more consistently with the rock.
PF Brett Mette (Teutopolis – 2016)
Mette stands at 6’5” with a thick and physical body. He got in some foul trouble in this contest, but still managed to be effective. While not very athletic he is crafty and physical down on the low block. Used a nice pump fake to get his man in the air then went around him for a score. Also hit a corner three. He had 15 points. Small college prospect.
SG Mitch Hardeik (Teutopolis – 2017)
Hardeik is a 6’3” shooting guard that has a strong body. He can really shoot the ball from the perimeter with elevation on his jumper. Drilled a couple triples off the catch. Also finished inside a couple times including posting up on a high/low finish. He finished with 13 points. Small college prospect in junior class for D3/NAIA schools next year.
