SF Matt Chastain (Leroy – 2016)
Late season senior hype is an annual occurrence. Players start getting over recruited because there is nobody left. Every once in a while it turns out to be a guy that has greatly improved since the summer. That is exactly what has happened with this kid. Chastain played on the Irish Select team last spring and really didn’t stand out. He has put up monster numbers against 1A competition and landed five D1 offers in the last week. We had to see what was up! Well he is a different player. At 6’6” Chastian completely dominated the game against Newark in every single way possible. The 2016 prospect has a good frame with length and room to continue to grow strength wise. First area that stood out from the jump was his perimeter shooting. He opened the game with a wing three with great elevation off the floor and pure mechanics at the top of the release. Chastain creates space very well although he did get away with a couple push offs. He gets enough room to get his shot off consistently. Handled the ball fluidly going into several off his pull up jumpers from mid-range. As a ball handler he looked comfortable in the open floor and slick handling it through traffic going behind his back a few times. Did have a couple turnovers, but overall was effective putting the ball on the ground. Plus athlete that can get up above the rim as he did on alley-oop passes off backdoor cuts. Had a nice high/low finish posting his man up late. Sound passer that had several nice reads in the half court. Defensively should be an average defender at the D1 level with his length and athleticism. Active on the glass especially early in this contest. He only missed three shots the entire game and didn’t force anything. I was VERY cautiously optimistic coming into this game after the hype of the last week. He more than lived up to it. Yes he wasn’t going against the greatest competition, but Newark junior Will Clausel is known for being a tough and gritty defender that will play college basketball at the small school level. Chastain finished with 34 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Looked like a low-major prospect that could be a fit in the right situation at a mid-major program.
PF Jack Clausel (Newark – 2016)
The 6’6” power forward from Newark has been on the radar for a long time. He is a thick bodied and crafty big man. Not the greatest athlete, but has a knack for getting the job done and putting up numbers. He did everything he could in this game. The senior is a quality area rebounder that has a feel for where it is coming off the rack and boxes out well. He had a few offensive rebound put backs in this contest. Solid hook shot that he can use to score with both his right and left hands. He has always had the ability to shoot the ball and did that in his final high school game hitting a 15 foot pull up as well as a catch and shoot three. Versatile four man that while not the greatest athlete really knows how to play the game of basketball! He had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Great fit at the D3 level!
