In the end Lawrenceville’s defensive pressure and passing was too much as they advanced with a victory. Here we break down the prospects that stood out including a few senior sleepers.
SG Austin Swalls (Carterville – 2016)
Swalls is a 6’1” shooting guard that has carried his team throughout the season. In this game he got in early foul trouble which hampered his production, but he got it going in the second half. Swalls is a combo guard that is a solid passer especially once he gets in the lane making great reads dumping it off to his big men for buckets. Shows the ability to win off the bounce and is slippery through traffic spinning in the lane and maneuvering his body to get through the defense. Effective mid-range shooter. One area to work on would be creating space on his shot as he got it blocked a couple times. Overall just a tough kid that competes and is adequate rebounder. He had 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Should definitely be looked at by D3/NAIA schools as a priority guy.
PF Taylor Heil (Carterville – 2017)
Heil really impressed in this game. He stands at 6’5” with a long and projectable frame where he should continue filling out and could grow a couple more inches. Face up four man that is good in the pick and pop game. Can hit the mid-range jump shot and has a high release point on his shot. Also has a soft touch and feel scoring around the hoop. Posts up strong and has good hands. High pointed rebounds throughout the night. Maybe not the greatest athlete, but he definitely is mobile enough to play at the D3/NAIA level in a couple years. He went for 17 points and 10 rebounds.
SF Justin Johnson (Carterville – 2018)
Was really looking forward to getting another look at this 6’2” sophomore shooting guard. Johnson impressed when we saw him in a camp setting back in the fall. He couldn’t find a rhythm in this game. Only had 2 points and wasn’t very assertive. Long arms and a thick lower half. Should be a very good player down the line, but it wasn’t his night.
SG Harry Loeb (Lawrenceville – 2016)
Loeb is a 6’1 shooting guard that is Mr. Intangible. He was all over the floor making plays. Handles the ball well scoring on a couple tough drives in the paint. Crisp passes that led to several baskets. Runs the floor hard in transition. Tough defense including a couple blocked jumpers. Overall just a tough southern Illinois high school basketball player. Not the greatest athlete, but worth consideration at the D3/NAIA level. Loeb led his team to the win with 20 points.
SG Brandt Cochran (Lawrenceville – 2016)
Cochran complimented Loeb well with his perimeter shooting. The thick bodied wing hit several wing threes. Got out in the second half for some transition buckets. He also had 20 points. He is committed to College of the Ozarks.
