That duel was between Jacobs’ Cameron Krutwig and Larkin’s Christian Negron. They are very different players, but when two of the top big men in a class go head to head it is always a good evaluation. Here is the breakdown of the battle!
C Cameron Krutwig (Jacobs – 2017)
Tremendous game for the 6’9” big bodied post. Krutwig is a big boy with a physical body and is a strong anchor on both ends of the floor. Offensively Krutwig took it to Negron when they were one on one early using his strength to back Negron in and finish around the rim by using the glass. The lefty has a soft touch around the hoop and shoots a high percentage on his post touches. Excellent footwork in the paint, but doesn’t have great vertical lift or explosion. Out of the post Krutwig really sees the floor with his passing ability. As the game went along he started seeing double and triple teams on each post touch. Keeps the ball high. Draws contact and gets to the foul line at a quality clip where he is a solid free throw shooter. He did a great job of finding open shooters on the other side of the floor with crisp passes. Turned it over a few times when he tried to handle it in the open floor or when he had some space and put it on the deck. Good outlet passer as well including throwing one right on the money for a layup. Plus area rebounder that secures them with strong hands. He has a feel for where it is coming off and had several offensive rebound put backs while also clearing the defensive glass consistently. Did a nice job with his post defense on the interior anchoring against the quicker Negron and blocking several shots while not leaving the ground to open himself up to fouls. Didn’t defend on the perimeter much as he backed off his man when they went out there. Not the quickest laterally which is definitely an area to improve. Overall he finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, and 3 turnovers. Should be coveted by mid-major programs and needs to be on the high-major radar.
PF Christian Negron (Larkin – 2017)
At 6’7” Negron has a long wingspan and great athleticism. The four man is slightly undersized, but makes up for it with his tremendous motor and bounce around the hoop. That was evident in this game on several put backs. Negron is a plus offensive rebounder that has a knack for getting on the glass with an explosive second jump. The junior scored several times with athletic put backs. He high points rebounds and snatched several contested boards out of the air. Didn’t force his offense and mostly played facing up which is where he is the most comfortable. He hit a few jumpers including a 12 foot turnaround and another sweet 15 foot face up jumper. Really has improved his consistency on his jump shot with sound mechanics. Didn’t do much damage scoring in the post with his back to the basket against the more physical Krutwig. Solid passer that makes crisp dishes and keeps the ball moving. Defensively his springy ability allows him to be a shot blocking presence. Negron had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 turnovers. High major prospect as a combo forward that brings energy to the table.
