Biggest surprise – Crown Point
Valparaiso started this sectional off with the biggest surprise likely of the entire week by defeating Merrillville in the opener. The host in Crown Point took advantage, too, by winning by five points in the finals. Crown Point wasn’t considered a complete underdog, but it most people had Merrillville or Valpo coming out of this sectional.
Everywhere else looks chalky
Crown Point was the biggest surprise, because, really, almost everyone else the top or second best team ended up emerging from the sectional. You could very well argue the next biggest surprise of a team was Carmel emerging through its sectional by defeating Noblesville, Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers. That’s just how this sectional played out. Sure some early games had minor upsets, but none of the major ones happened to create an unlikely sectional champion.
Overcoming history – Southport
Let’s give a moment to Southport for, finally, breaking the Pike jynx or hurdle or whatever you want to call 17 straight losses to a team. Southport has a lot of talent but losing that many times to a team creates a mental block of some sort and it was finally able to get past it to secure its first sectional win since 2000.
Reliving history – Connersville
This is one of the more historic programs in the state, but it has been awhile since the school felt the joy of a sectional title. This title was the school’s first since 1997 and moves it into a tie for seventh most in the state with New Castle. This title certainly brings back some glory to a school that once was a regular fixture past sectionals from the 1920-1990s.
