Although Flagstaff carried a lead into the 2nd quarter, they would not hold it long as Cesar Chavez started to heat. Their defense began generating offense, they were able to get into the lane better and hit three 3 pointers, two of which came from 6’2″ Sophomore Michael Rogers, which made it difficult for Flagstaff to continue to play a mixture of zone defenses. Although Flagstaff trailed at halftime, a strong performance from Kaleb Sandoval, Brett Morrow, and Brandon Tiffany was enough to pull off the 1 point “upset”.
-Flagstaff-
Kaleb Sandoval 5’11 2016 PG/SG – Sandoval has earned a reputation for being a prime time shooter; however, he did far more than that in this one. Even though he did hit his customary two three pointers, Sandoval attacked the rim well as he earned seven trips to the foul line and he was able to connect on six of them. He saw a lot of pressure tonight as Cesar Chavez tried to run him off the line, and he responded well as he showed that he can do more than be a catch and shoot player. Sandoval is a Division-III/NAIA D2 prospect.
Brandon Tiffany 5’11 2017 PG – Tiffany has been a huge X-Factor for Flagstaff this season. He does a great job of pushing the basketball in transition and finishing in crowds. He demonstrates a high basketball IQ as he finds lines and seems to always draw contact while in the air. He is an above average shooter as well, but his biggest contribution to Flagstaff is his ability to handle pressure as he played relatively turnover free against a pressuring and athletic Cesar Chavez. Tiffany is a Division-III/NAIA D2 prospect.
Brett Morrow 6’8″ 2016 C/PF – Morrow certainly has some areas he needs to work in; however, he is one of the most shocking prospects in the state as he is a dominate big man who holds no offers. He changes games due to his ability to rebound the basketball. Last night, it seemed as though he either got every rebound, a hand on every rebound, or opened it up so that a teammate could get the board. He is far more comfortable shooting the basketball from 15 feet than he is posting up on the block. With that said, he has demonstrated an ability to take care of business with the other big boys. He also possesses an above average motor. Currently, Morrow should be a Division II/NAIA D1 propsect.
Bridger Hershey 6’3″ 2016 SG/SF – Hershey is a tough defender who plays his role well for Flagstaff. He does a lot of little things that puts this team in a position to be successful. He is a Division-III/NAIA D2 propsect.
-Cesar Chavez-
Kenny Sutton 5’9″ 2016 PG/SG – Sutton has made a name for himself all year due to his ability to shoot the basketball. He maintained that reputation tonight as he had nine of his 11 points from behind the line. Sutton is a low Division-II/NAIA-D1 prospect.
Donald Carter 6’1″ 2017 PG/SG – Carter only had one point in the first half; however, he turned it on greatly in the second half as he had 15 points. He was able to get into the lane seemingly at will. He possesses size, speed, toughness, and athleticism that make it very difficult to stay in front of him. Carter is a low Division-I prospect.
Malik Porter 6’3″ 2017 SF – Porter had a couple of big threes in hits game and assisted in providing some up-tempo defense that made it difficult for Flagstaff to get into their offensive sets. Porter is a low Division-II/NAIA-D1 prospect.
Dischon Thomas 6’7″ 2018 PF – Thomas is a very talented prospect; however, Morrow’s domination of the game held him relatively in check. He only had seven point and was not has much of a factor on the glass as usual. Despite having somewhat of an off night, Thomas is still a big time prospect. His athleticism, soft touch around the rim, and motor make him a Division-I prospect.
Michael Rogers 6’2″ 2018 SG – Rogers played solid in this game as he hit two huge threes in the second quarter that turned the tide at that time. Rogers has a solid handle and a good shoot. He is a low Division-II/NAIA-D1 prospect.
