Continue ReadingAfter coming so close to winning the state championship the last two seasons as the starting point guard for Landstown High School, 5’11” Tyriq Nady realized that he had to begin to look toward his future. While Landstown is a terrific program and coaching staff that has produced a number of division one basketball players, Nady felt that he himself wasn’t ready for the next level.
“Landstown was a great school, and the basketball program was the best in Virginia Beach, and I want to thank my coaches for everything they did,” Nady said. “My decision to transfer was based on me not being physically and mentally prepared for the next level.”
Nady made the decision over the summer to transfer to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham. A program known to produce top level talent at both the varsity and post graduate level, they are known as one of the most prestigious programs on the east coast. Both on the court and off it, Nady feels like it gave him the best chance to prepare for the next level.
“Off the court, Hargrave is a preparatory school with more discipline, amazing facilities and faculty that wants nothing but the best for you, Nady said. “Basketball wise, the post graduate and varsity program work together to develop the players and prepare us to play at the next level.”
A heady point guard that embraces the “small guard philosophy,” Nady is always one of the toughest players on the floor. He’s not afraid to get in the lane and bang around with the bigs, and his intelligence allows him to create plays and finish over players much bigger than him.
Tyriq Nady is a heady point guard who’s a coach on the floor. The move seems to have worked out for the lead guard, who earned First Team VIC honors averaging 16 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game while shooting an astounding 59% from the field. While the offers haven’t rolled in, Nady has gained a lot of interest from small schools at each level, and is contemplating a prep year at Hargrave. Still, he believes his game, and life, has benefited from his time at the Prep School.
“My game has grown tremendously. My confidence, aggression and decision making has allowed me to become a better player, but I couldn’t have done it without my coaches and my team.”
Put his size aside too, because he’s a pure point guard that plays with a chip.
“I want coaches to see that my size doesn’t matter. I’m going to give you 120% when I step on the court, and I’m all about getting the job done and doing the little things to help my team win.”
It’s hard to think of any other type of player you would want leading your team into a big game.
