Class AA Caledonia is putting together a stellar resume. The Warriors are 23-2 and ranked No. 3 in AA according to the NHR rankings, with their only losses coming from AAAA power Hopkins and out-of-state G-E-T. One of their key seniors is Gavin Schroeder, a 6-foot-6 forward with lots of potential. MIACs are hovering and hoping they can land him sooner than later.
“My three schools left are St. Olaf, St. John’s and Gustavus,” Schroeder said. “I was at the first St. John’s and St. Thomas game, and I visited Gustavus a month or two ago.”
With just two losses all year, it’s easy to look ahead and imagine Caledonia competing with St. Croix Lutheran, Braham, returning champ Melrose or young/talented Minnehaha Academy at the state tournament in March. As coaches always tell their players, however, Schroeder is trying to temper his expectations and take it slow.
“I’m feeling really good about our team,” he said. “We are feeling very confident, but we can’t get too in over our heads… we have to remember to take it a game at a time and hopefully end up playing for a state championship.”
This current group of Warriors continues a stellar 10-year run that Caledonia (a town of roughly 2,800 people) has enjoyed in football and basketball. The town’s culture of success is extremely impressive.
“The coaches, they do a great job of getting kids in the weight room and the gym,” Gavin added. “We have a great culture around here, people are committed and they work hard. Tradition plays a big role too, when you see the kids ahead of you be successful it makes you wanna be successful too.”
