Though the Iron Mountain junior is more comfortable still in the paint, he says he’s spending most of his time on the perimeter this season with the Mountaineers.
“I play outside a lot, and inside, and I like to do both. I can handle the ball pretty well, and I can shoot from outside as well as taking it too the basket, and I think that makes me harder to guard,” said Wonders.
“I’m spending most of my time on the perimeter, but right now I’m more-so comfortable in the post, just because I’ve always been down there. I’ve only moved my game out to the perimeter in the last couple of years.”
He added: “I’ll probably play small forward at the next level, I don’t think I’ll be big enough to play down low. Either that, or I’ll be an undersized power forward.”
The last three years Wonders has been playing with the Northern Michigan Drive, but he’s going to be playing with the Wisconsin Crusaders for his 17U season this summer.
“The last few years I was 6-foot-3 and playing center and it was pretty difficult for me. So this year I just want to try something different,” he said.
With one summer left to showcase his versatility, Wonders is hoping to add to his short list of already-interested D2 schools.
“I’ve talked to the coaches from Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech University, and I’ve gotten some letters from some D3 schools around Detroit, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Nothing too special, just invited to camps, and checking in seeing how I’m doing,” said Wonders.
“I’d say Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan have been in contact with me the most so far. I’m really thinking about it a lot. But I try not to stress about it too much. I’m trying to just play my best, and try not to talk myself up – I’d rather just show people what I can do.”
Meanwhile, Wonders is having a tremendous junior season, and says he’s averaging 25.4 points, and 8.9 rebounds per game.
“I consider myself one of the leaders of our team. I’m one of the go-to guys, and one of the leading scorers,” said Wonders. “I try and keep everybody going, and so far we’ve been doing pretty well.”
