The 6-foot-1 sharpshooter played with Camp Darryl last offseason during his 16U season, and has not decided who he’ll play with this spring and summer.
“Recruitment has picked up for me a little bit lately. I had interest expressed by Kalamazoo College, Northwood, Alma Scots, and other schools of that nature, like D3s,” said Hoekstra.
“Coaches have talked to me on a couple of occasions, and I’ve received texts and calls too. Those three I mentioned would probably be the three I’ve heard from the most so far.”
He’s committed to receiving a college scholarship for basketball, and he knows that starts with him improving each day.
“It’s something I think about because that’s my goal is to play in college,” said Hoekstra. “But also I’m just focused on getting better everyday, because you can’t get too far ahead of yourself.”
The 6-foot-1 shooting guard went of to describe his playing style to PHM, and what his role is this season with the Trojans.
“I believe my strengths as a player would be my shooting – that’s my greatest strength. Not only catching and shooting, but I think I have a good pull up game as well. I think I also do a good job of moving the ball, and getting it to my teammates,” he said.
“I think I need to work on displaying more athleticism, ball-handling ability, and just scoring in general – all-around scoring.”
In his first season as a starting guard with the varsity, Hoekstra says his coach has given him the green light to shoot.
“My coach gave me the role at the beginning of the season to just shoot the ball whenever I’m open; get it, catch it, shoot it – that’s what he wants me to do,” said Hoekstra.
“I think I’ve had a pretty good season, I’ve made improvements in a lot of areas. My shooting has been really good so far, and my defense has improved a lot, which is something I was really looking for.”
