The junior will finish his high school season soon, before transitioning into his vital 17U campaign. Though he’s unsure of who exactly he’ll play with this spring and summer, he says it will probably be Tri City Heat.
Williams is currently seeing a wide variety of interest — from D1 to Division III — and he explained the specifics of the contact he’s had with the programs.
“My most recent interest was from Tampa University, they came and saw me recently. And then I’ve been contacted by Western Illinois, Findlay (OH), Lipscomb, Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, Hope College, and Alma,” he said.
“Schools that I’ve actually been on the phone with are Cornell, Western Illinois, Findlay. I’ve talked to Alma and visited Alma. I’ve emailed Lipscomb, and talked with Hope a lot, and then Grand Valley I’ve talked to on the phone.”
Even with the slight D1 interest, and plenty of coaches identifying him as a potential student-athlete, Williams feels he’s under the radar a bit.
“I feel like my recruitment has been delayed a bit,” said Williams — PHM’s 105th-ranked 2017 — but I just have to take care of what I can take care of and let the rest fall into place.”
While he awaits his first offer, the combo guard — who in the past has been a shooting guard — will work to transition to point guard.
“I’m starting to transfer into more of a point guard, so I’m more of a combo-guard right now. I feel like I’m a very good shooter and a very good ball-handler. And I have a high IQ and pretty good feel for the game,” said Williams.
“I know that the goals that I have for myself require me to play point guard. I have aspirations to play Division I, and to be a 6-foot-2 shooting guard is unrealistic. So I think for that goal I have for myself I need to fully transition to point guard,” he said.
“I’m getting a lot of reps in, getting better and learning more and more everyday. And just trying to get in the gym whenever I can to improve.”
With his junior season winding down, the talented prospect mentioned what his role has been this season.
“My role is to be a leader,” said Williams. “This is my second year on varsity, and it’s my job — no matter what the situation is — to control things on the floor; whether that’s assisting, or scoring, or rebounding, just keeping everyone on the same page.”
