PHD has separate articles on D1 prospects Aanen Moody and Jordan Meidinger, below is what we thought of the top players from Minot in the game against the Midgets last week.
KyJuan Johnson (6-ft-0 Junior guard)
- Early in the game John took a dribble hand off on the left wing, saw the defense was late in getting into position and burst into space releasing before anybody could contest the attempt. Kyjuan showed his ability to win the race to the rim and finish in traffic.
- Doesn’t waste time with the pass. Actually sets up passes before catching the ball as Kyjuan does a nice job staying wide, catching, and then zipping the ball to the intended destinations. Love his zip on the ball beating defenders to the area.
- Really good free throw shooter. Shot a barrage of them at one point in the first half
- His change of direction dribble has opposing defenders bouncing everywhere but where they need to be.
- Really like his pace push. Retreating defenders have a hard time stopping the ball when he is pushing.
- Love his decisions in transition. Makes the right play to free him or others seemingly 90 percent of the time.
- Really liked the score off a skip pass where Johnson caught, attacked, beat his guy to the corner, muscled him off and then lefty touched the ball over off the glass over the help defending length.
- Teammates seem to like playing with him a lot. They point to him after all the good passes and when guys come on the floor you can see he is a leader they respect as Johnson grabs their attention and they instantly listen to his advice/command.
- When Moody had the gym buzzing about his numbers, KyJuan matched his baskets with scoring trips of his own. The matching scores weren’t as flashy but they kept Minot with the Midgets when Moody was going off. Great responses. Clutch foul shooting.
- His attack was so physical and so quick for this level of basketball that late in the game Johnson blew by the first guy, busted through reaches, scored and was fouled. No way you can guard a strong, physical, and skilled attacker like this without stepping in front when in help.
Jesse Roberts (6-ft-5, Senior, F)
- One of the more active off ball moves on the offensive end you will see. At 6-foot-5, active, and agile Roberts is one of the toughest assignments to block out for a rotating guard.
- Caught my attention with a quick jet into the passing lane followed by a one hand dunk in the open floor.
- Does a lot on the move. Had a one dribble attack into a one hand off the glass finish that was finished with touch. Seems to shoot better on the move than when set.
- Does a great job cutting off the backside on attacks to catch and finish.
- His first jumper that missed terribly scared me off but his corner trey with feet set early in the second half while being fouled was quite impressive. A four point play.
- Impressed with Jesse’s low post power score making contact with Meidinger to stun him and then quickly jump over the top for two points. Smart and physical.
- Cut with two steps on the baseline, caught, scored a nice 12 footer after a jumpstop. Nice touch on the move again and at 6-foot-5 his activity and solid touch on the move is quite intriguing.
DiAndre Booker (6-ft-2, Senior, SG)
- Had a nasty block and then sprinted up the floor faster than the other nine on the court. Showed extreme hops for the block and then his speed up the floor caught the eye as well.
- Moved off the ball on the backside, got his hands up, caught with space that he created with his movement, hit a trey with a nice release although the wind up was low. Showed some range.
- Had a well timed leap, catch, and hit on a lob play just before the length of Meidinger could contest his attempt. DiAndre had to adjust his body in the air, hang in the air, catch, and quickly kiss the shot off the glass. Really an amazing finish when you think about all he had to do.
- A lefty so he scores from a bit different angle than the defense is used to.
- The defense got tired late and Booker had a sequence of an explosive dribble attack finish followed by a big block the other way and then a steal jumping in a passing lane leading to an assist for a score. It was a huge 15 seconds for Minot and DiAndre.
Braydon Lund (6-ft-4, Senior, PF).
- Every bit the bruiser he is said to be. The first time he touched Meidinger in the block he just chested him and continued to chest the near seven footer until he fell over.
- Like the mid-range touch he showed early in the game making a shot that was actually off balance.
- Did not play much later in the game so there was not much to get into but he is one of the tougher battles to stop rebounding in the state.
