The top two seeds, No. 1 Mount St. Joseph and No. 2 St. Frances, scored semifinal victories Thursday night. St. Joe topped Glenelg Country School, 52-46 to earn a spot in the finals. St. Frances, meanwhile, beat John Carroll, 59-49.
Up next is the championship game, set for Sunday night at 7:45 at UMBC. The two teams already played twice this year, which each winning once.
Mount St. Joseph was led by Randy Miller’s 13 points, as reported by The Baltimore Sun, but the Gaels got lots of help late from Nigel Jackson.
He finished with 11 points but scored six of them in the final three minutes to help the Gaels hold on for the victory, according to The Sun.
Mount St. Joseph now is 28-3.
St. Frances had an easier time against John Carroll, jumping to a 10-point halftime lead and held on in the second half. The Sun reported that the Patriots cut the St. Frances lead to three early in the second half, but the Panthers took over after that.
Kurk Lee, Jr. led the winners with 21 points and was a big force on offense. Daquan Bracey added 17 while Tairik Johnson had 11 as St. Frances had too much offensive firepower for John Carroll.
St. Frances improved to 28-8 this season heading into Sunday’s title game.
