Early in the game, it was a back and forth affair and after the first quarter, the two teams were tied at 13-13. However, in the second quarter, Lincoln struggled to work against the zone and Chelsea got some big production from its shooters, pushing itself out to a 22-20 lead at half.
However, in the second half, Ty Groce started to emerge and Lincoln was able to get enough production from the backcourt against the zone to push out the lead. It was a 10 point advantage at the end of the third quarter and in the final minutes, the game was over.
All told, Ypsilanti Lincoln grabbed a 57-41 win over Chelsea.
Chelsea
Alex Vasquez, 6-4 junior, F
Used his pivot foot to hit a nice jumper in the first quarter.
Ethan French, 6-3 senior, G
Continued to move off the ball on the offensive side of the court and had a really nice drive late in the first quarter where he was able to finish through contact and get to the line.
Trevor Kingsley, 6-3 senior, F
A sturdy forward that relies on his strength and physical size to make plays. He was alert and engaged defensively all night. Not only was he pointing out assignments to other teammates, but he also used his body and size to prevent drives. Had a nice block and steal early on. He also showed the ability to drive inside thanks to a decent handle and staying low with the ball. Finished with 10 points.
Cameron Cooper, 5-11 junior, G
A guard with decent quickness that can drive. He was able to use his speed to get penetration a few times off the bounce. Along with that, he did a nice job of keeping the ball away from the defender on the drive and finishing at the hoop. Also had a big steal and finish in the third quarter. Took a hard foul late in the game and was helped off the court, but did return later on. He finished with seven points.
Ben Kaemming, 5-11 junior, G
He connected on a huge three in the third quarter and showed a lot energy on defense, even though he had some tough matchups.
Jack Bush, 6-2 junior, G
Took a really physical charge when Chelsea was trying to comeback in the first half.
Bryce Jubenville, 6-2 junior, G
He played very aggressively late when Chelsea was down significantly and trying to get their way back into the game. Made some key defensive plays with the press.
Ryan Mitchell, 5-11 junior, G
Displayed a smooth shooting stroke from long range and was able to put together a few decent drives. Still continuing to fill out and expand the other areas of his game.
Ypsilanti Lincoln
Jesse Davis, 6-2 sophomore, G
Made a few decent reads against the zone and did a decent job of protecting the ball from perimeter defenders.
Nolan Myles – 6-4 junior, F
A relatively athletic forward that can run inn transition and make plays inside. He was a key factor in transition for Lincoln and kept finding himself in the right place at the right time. Along with that, he did a nice job of forcing fouls under the basket and at finishing through contact.
JeJuan Williams, 6-2 senior, G/F
A lengthy guard with decent athleticism. Made most of his impact on the defensive end where he used his length and footwork to disrupt ball handlers on the perimeter. However, he did hit a big three early on to put Lincoln ahead and had a great steal that lead to score early in the second half because he pressured the inbound for Chelsea. He finished with 19 points on the night thanks to a big second half.
Charve Patterson, 6-2 senior, G
Showed some decent ability to pass the ball from the elbow and connected on a few shots over Chelsea’s zone. He also stayed low and wide defensively and was able to force a few Chelsea players into bad looks. Had a really nice play in transition late in the third quarter where he fed the ball through a defender to get a teammate a great look at the hoop. Finished with 15 points.
Ty Groce, 6-7 senior, F
Groce remains one of the most versatile players in the state due to the combination of his athleticism, impressive length, and size. He actually had a few tough plays early on the game, but showed real composure in overcoming the slow start. He did this by making his presence felt in the lane on the defensive end and by asserting himself in transition and with a few big drives. Made some great passes out of Chelsea’s zone and also finished over the top of it. Finished with eight points on the night. Groce is ranked No. 7 in Prep Hoop Michigan’s 2016 rankings.
