Our first edition of the player/prospect rankings released prior to the start of their sophomore seasons. Here’s a look at some players that did a great deal for themselves in their second year of high school basketball.
Timmy Allen 6’4” SF Desert Ridge (Rank: 1/Prev. Rk: 3)
While the loss of Marvin Bagley helps Allen’s case at number one, it is not the sole reason that he made the jump to the top of the rankings. Timmy has had a tremendous sophomore season with numbers that match anyone in his class across the nation. The 6-foot, 4-inch wing did a lot of work a trimmed his body which has helped him to become more agile and allowed his athleticism to show. He has a great feel for the game and can score with the best of them. A high major prospect at this point.
Dischon Thomas 6’7” PF Cesar Chavez (Rank: 3/Prev. Rk: 6)
Another player who may have seemed to rise by the loss of prospects in this class, Thomas has continually gotten better and earned his rise in the rankings. The 6’7” North Carolina transplant is very mobile and getting more aggressive each and every game. He is a lengthy frame, finishes at the rim, and plays with a high level motor. A mid major prospect.
Tevy Jones 6’5” SF Chandler (Rank: 5/Prev. Rk: 9)
Jones has had a solid sophomore campaign at Chandler. Teaming alongside ASU football commit N’Keal Harry, Tevy’s versatility has been big for the Wolves on both ends of the floor. He has affected games with his defense, ability to attack the glass, and outside shooting. A mid major prospect with higher upside.
Trey Wood 6’8” PF Anthem Prep (Rank: 6/Prev. Rk: 21)
Wood has helped himself in the rankings more than any other player on this list. He has grown a lot since the fall (last listed at 6’5”) and his ability to change the game on the defensive end has been uncanny. The mobile, lengthy sophomore leads the state of Arizona in blocks at better than 7 per game and no one is close. Currently a mid major prospect.
Patrick Kelly 6’7” PF Pinnacle (Rank: 11/Prev. Rk: 19)
Kelly has had a very productive sophomore season. On a team that features two post players committed to Division-I and Division-II programs, he’s been the most consistent player. Patrick brings energy to the floor and plays with a motor. He has been great on the glass, is aggressive at the rim, and is knocking down shots form the perimeter. A low major prospect.
