Continue ReadingThe wing position would be considered the weakest in the 2017 class when discussing current ability, production, and depth in terms of potential but they do have some prospects with a lot of upside. Here’s a look of strengths and weaknesses of this group.
-Strengths-
Versatility
While there are no big time scorers in this group of wings there are a lot of utility guys that do a lot of things well. Caleb Simmons, the top wing in the updated rankings, can knock down shots, defend, and rebound. Bryce Fowler, DeShawn Wilson, and Keith Holmes are similar as are some of the others at this position.
Size
There are some big wings in the 2017 class. Of the 25 shooting guards, six of them stand 6-feet, 3-inches or taller. Moreover, 9 of the 12 small forwards stand 6-feet, 4-inches or taller.
-Weaknesses-
D1 Ready Talent
While there are some solid Division-I prospects at this position only Caleb Simmons is ready to contribute immediately. Players like Saikou Gueye, Bryce Fowler, and (possibly) Keith Holmes, Colten Kresl, and DeShawn Wilson may earn Division-I scholarships but none are guys that are expected to come in and immediately impact a program at that level.
Sharpshooters
It’s rare that you find a class of wings without a plethora of pure shooters. While there are a ton of guys that can make shots if left open, only Colten Kresl, Jeff Perez, Carson Pinter, and JT Thoman are considered true automatic shooting threats.
