Continue ReadingWe mentioned in our last article the five things that we walked away talking the most about after the Chance Harman Classic, but it was far from the only subjects of the weekend. There were plenty of players who increased their stock by showing coaches what they can bring a team at the next level. Here, we’ll highlight eight seniors that we feel should get more attention after seeing them at at the Chance Harman Classic last weekend.
Malcolm Weathers; Sr. WF; Cape Henry
One of the most underrated unsigned seniors in the state, Weathers has improved immensely on the basketball. He’s always been a knock down shooter from deep, but the lefty has improved handling the basketball in transition, and is now comfortable going either way and creating plays. He’s still best as a perimeter defender and knock down shooter, and is also a scholarship level player from a winning program that knows what it takes to get it done.
Blake Burdack; Sr. F; Radford
The 6’8 Australian was one of the guys we were excited to see coming into the event, and we could quickly see why there was buzz in SWVA surrounding him. Burdack is a skilled european style big man who can step out and play on the perimeter. You can run an offense through him at the high post where he can pass or shoot it, and his ability to hit the outside jumper opens the lane for guards to attack. He’s also an excellent rebounder, and showed a high motor on both ends of the floor in the paint. He’s one that coaches should take a look at, and could play at a scholarship level in the right system.
Yesid Mosquera; Sr. PF; Carlisle
On a day when all the rest of the Carlisle players came out flat, Mosquera competed the entire game. An undersized four man at 6’5, he played strong in the post and showed the ability to step out and hit the deep ball when set. He’s a tough and athletic player who can guard multiple positions and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He was originally committed to Furman before they changed staffs, and now he’s one of the better available forwards in the state.
John Reed-Barnes; Sr. PF; Gate City
We knew he was good, but man is he versatile. The 6’4 stretch four showed the ability to score it at all three levels and helped in multiple roles in their win over Floyd County. Reed-Barnes finished with a game high 23 points, and got them from all over the floor. He has a lot of interest from division three programs, and would be an impact player and great get for any ODAC or division three program in the area.
Diogo Brito; Sr. WG; Mount Mission
Diogo both played smart basketball all weekend, and put up big numbers in the process. The 6’4 wing guard showed tremendous feel on both ends, creating plays for teammates on offensive and showing great awareness in the help side defensively. He finished with 17 points, making three three-pointers, in their win over Carlisle, and would be a solid wing for a low level division one or division two team.
Jakub Mijakowski; Sr. WF; Mount Mission
Everyone is always looking for a shooter, why not take one that’s also 6’7? Mijakowski has a pure stroke and he’s able to let it fly over a lot of perimeter players because of his size. He was dead eye in catch-and-shoot situations throughout the weekend, and isn’t one that’s going to take bad shots or try to prove that he can do more than shoot. He’s a division one level shooter with great size.
Blake Hairston; Sr. PF; Floyd County
If you’re a division three school looking to take a chance on a kid with high upside, Hairston is your guy. The 6’4 forward is an explosive athlete, one that you usually won’t find at that level. He’s still very raw, but from his athleticism and high motor he finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds in their loss against Gate City. His ability to get off his feet quickly and his strong frame means that he could pay off for someone looking for an athlete.
Chase Rosenbaum; Sr. C; George Wythe
He wasn’t great at the Northside Invitational Tournament during the week, but the 6’5 big man was great in their win over Giles County. Rosenbaum is a burly post player with a soft touch that rebounds well. He’s a paint clogger with good hands and solid footwork, and is even capable of handling the basketball in transition and to help relieve pressure. There were a lot of division three coaches that were asking about him last weekend, and he finished with 8 points, 15 rebounds and 3 steals.
