Continue ReadingThe Chaska Hawks are 13-4 and they were not supposed to be this good yet. Not according to what everybody thought. This is a team that lost Jacob Hansen to St. Thomas, Peyton Sanders to SMSU football, Colby Murphy to graduation, and current junior Alex Strazzanti to an injury. They brought only 24 points per game back from a 22-7 team!
Yet here the Hawks are with wins over Lakeville North, Eastview, Eden Prairie, Shakopee, and last night Chaska gave Cooper their second loss of the season 66-65.
Leading the way for Chaska was the 28 points from junior Myles Hanson. Myles is scoring 23 a game this year while fellow junior Andrew Kallman is giving a dozen a night.
I believe many underestimated how good Hanson and Kallman would be game by game and they definitely undervalued this senior class. Jameson Meyer, Luke Roskam, Luke Hennen, Travis Fauchald, and Sean Engel (had double figures last night) have all stepped up.
Hanson is leading the way and his junior season has caught the attention of many.
“Last year, we had a lot of captains, so they led the team,” Myles recently told the Gopher Hole. “We had really good team chemistry and they were a big part of that, so I take that upon myself to make sure that we have good team bonding.
“Good team chemistry throughout the game and throughout the season, so just creating a good team atmosphere and also leading my team on the floor, whether it is picking them up when we are down, helping us stay intense when it is kind of easy to get complacent if we are up by a lot.”
Hanson is a top ten or better talent in Minnesota’s loaded 2017 class of talent. Several schools have been in contact including Northern Iowa who recently offered and the home school the University of Minnesota.
Hanson is after all a consistently productive 6-foot-5 wing with some of the most explosive hops in the state and he’s a guy that plays hard on both ends. This is why several schools have shown the interest they have and more will soon.
“I have a full ride scholarship offer from Northern Iowa,” said Hanson. “I’m talking to the U of M, Cornell, Lehigh and Northwestern, currently with some NDSU calls and hopefully some visits to the Dakotas and Drake as well, so I would say that it is going pretty well, but I hope and expect to have more after this season.”
Hanson was able to take a couple visits before basketball season started and he had some memorable experiences.
“I attended the Northwestern football game and I went to the UNI versus North Carolina game, where they knocked off the number one team, so those were two big college experiences that I had and I plan on visiting the East Coast. Lehigh, Cornell and some of those schools and USD, NDSU, Nebraska, and those places as well.”
The interest will get even heavier this spring when Myles plays Grassroots with the Minnesota Fury once again. Fury Coach Pete Zurn continues to support Myles through the winter helping him with his recruitment.
“I like to keep my head on my shoulders,” Hanson explained. “I like to keep away from that stuff and focus on what is in front of me, so my (Grassroots) coach is very good about communicating with coaches. He’ll let me know when he is talking to colleges.
“He’ll be like “I contact the U of M today and they are really interested. They’ll probably come and check you out or I’ll have some colleges contact me,” but he has taken care of that and if anything comes up that I need to know, then he’ll tell me, but otherwise I’d like to just focus on high school.”
Hanson’s focus has been outstanding so far as Chaska is in a first place tie in the Metro West Conference race and he’s been as consistent as ever.
