Continue ReadingA fun point guard to watch in the junior class is St. Patrick’s Laurence Merritt. The St. Patrick’s 5’9” lead guard is a slick handling lead guard that can leave his man on the ground if they don’t respect his crossover. Solid shooter on the pull up from mid-range with a quick release. Pushes the tempo and finds teammates when penetrating inside.
Merritt talked about what type of lead guard he sees himself as.
“I would say I am complete point guard. I can shoot it, pass it, get to the rim. People think of me as just a shooter, but I want people to think of me as a complete point guard.”
What is his role for St. Pat’s this year?
“As a junior they want me to be everything. Score obviously. Defend to the best of my ability. Lead my team every game possible.”
On the grassroots circuit he runs with All-In/Young & Reckless. Last summer he was part of a very successful 16U squad.
“I think it went good. We have a lot of talent on that team. My role is different on that team from high school with us being loaded. I try to elevate my game by just keep working on my game.”
