Continue ReadingSteward School isn’t one of the first schools brought up when you start talking about high school basketball in the Richmond area, but they have quietly been one of the most consistent teams this season, sitting at 16-3 overall. They have a lot of new faces, as they brought in four of their five starters this offseason, but the one that returned made history earlier this month.
Senior point guard Chaise Johnson broke the Steward School all time scoring record, surpassing his head coach Jamiel Allen. It didn’t get all the press that Richmond commit De’Monte Buckingham got when he achieved the feat at Henrico, but it’s a big deal in the Steward community, one that Johnson hopes will have a lasting affect at the school.
“I want to be remembered at Steward for being a leader on and off the court and helping change Steward basketball to a winning culture,” Johnson said.
It’s no doubt that he will go down in Steward basketball history, and he is definitely a fan favorite at the school. Any game you go to, the 5’8 point guard gets the biggest ovation and they know that he’s going to compete his heart out every game that he’s wearing that uniform.
Chaise Johnson has set Steward School history as the school’s all-time leading scorer. He hasn’t had much of the same following with his recruitment, but the schools that have reached out to him like him a lot. He’s hoping to get a full ride to a division two school, but does list Guilford, Hampden-Sydney, Washington & Lee and Virginia State as some that have been recruiting him. There’s no secret as to what he can bring to the next level, because he’s done it throughout his career at Steward.
“Next year I think I will be able to be a quality scorer to a program that can also find guys when necessary, and hounds the ball defensively for ninety feet,” Johnson said.
While he’s hoping to increase his recruitment as he senior season winds down, he’s also not rushing to pick one. He’s interested in finding the right fit both on and off the basketball court.
“What I’m looking for in a school is a good education first off. Basketball wise I am looking for a place I have the opportunity to compete for a spot right away. I would also like to play for a team and coaching staff that has the same competitive drive and desire to win that I do.”
Johnson has already made history at his school, and he has a chance to go out on top his senior season. If he can lead them to an upset in the playoffs, he could reach his goal of being remembered as a winner and changing the culture of Steward School basketball for future generations.
