There was little separation between the Hawks and Coyotes until late when Josh Giese pushed to a game high 20 points and the Groos guards (Kade and Bodee, both sophomores) controlled the pace of the game from the backcourt and salted away the victory.
Colman-Egan
Kade Groos (5-ft-8, So, PG). Compact guard with a low, controlled handle that results in few turnovers and a quick ignition to start the offense in the right spot nearly every time. Groos is mainly a table setter and distributor and he does his role well but on the other end he is a ball pressure defender that forces the opposition to bad angles and high wing initial passes.
Bodee Groos (5-ft-10, So, SG). Plays off the ball from his cousin (that is a guess) and looks for feet set jumpers, he’s a quick ball reversal guys, and an active sprinter up the floor looking to run for attempts at the arc or at the rim. A very good rebounder for his size and an aggressive defender that rarely gets face-cut and is hard to muscle past.
Josh Giese (6-ft-4, Sr. PF). The MVP of the game, Giese was not stooped by the Coyotes. The biggest problem was they couldn’t move the compact four man so he was able to square up and show off his touch with a face-up jumper on the baseline, one dribble attacks into squared short finishes, and a handful of foul shot attempts. Good with back to the basket too and he gets second chance scores but what is really encouraging is his ability to face up and touch shots in.
Cole Kriech/Malik Poppenga (6-4, Jrs, PFs). The Hawk junior pair of bigs are both long and both run with the back. Both are also raw and need development but their size gives this team a constant two players in the frontcourt with length to board, agility to keep other size from easy scores as they force a lot over the top. Both score a couple times a game too.
