Now, junior Tyree Golston is looking to add his name to this list, and is excited for a chance to be a part of the tradition.
“It means a lot to me, and makes me work hard to try and fill their roles,” Golston said about the past influences. “I am trying to be a threat to other teams just like they were.”
Last season as a sophomore Tyree led his team with 13 points per game as well as leading the team in assists, while helping Tallwood make it the Coastal Conference semifinals. In doing so, he showed the ability to penetrate and react to the defense by finishing strong at the rim, or by finding the helper’s man for an open look.
Using his athleticism and quickness he has been able to beat defenders to the spot and is consistently drawing help, creating easy shots for his teammates. With Tallwood’s focus on pushing the ball and Coach Gonsules’ dribble drive style of offense ,Tyree is in a good position to continue to develop his skills as a floor general. The spacing created by the offense is favorable to a guard with his skills, and it allows a lot of opportunities to attack the basket off the dribble. As a young point guard, he has made some rookie mistakes, but is consistently working hard to expand his skills.
“In practice I am working on my finishing and my pivot moves, and I am also trying to get better at limiting my turnovers,” Golston said about his development.
If Golston continues to develop his skills and concentrate on improving his team, he will certainly be counted as one of Tallwood’s elite point guards. He has the ability and motivation to put himself in a position to continue his success at the college level.
