Jaylen Butz
6’9 – PF – 2017
Butz backed up his play down in Evansville with another great outing in the post. He was really aggressive early against Portage’s lack of size. The 6’9 forward is among one of the best prospects in the 2017 class and is growing with every game. He’s active and mobile, willing to work to get touches on a team that has a lot of players trying to get theirs. He showed really well guarding on the perimeter. He’s long enough and athletic enough to play out on the wing for a long stretch and not give up easy points. Starting to understand how to hedge on ball screens but only gets a couple of those chances a game. Hands are still top notch and he can grab every pass and finish the play. Was really effective. – 22 points
Brandan Johnson
6’2 – PG – 2018
Johnson had a nice game today using his ball skills to his advantage. I think he’ll stick at point guard for quite a while and even if you move him off the ball he can find ways to impact the game similar to how he does with Kinnie running the team. He uses screens really well in North’s motion offense and loves to curl down into the lane from the top of the key for runners and layups. He’s been able to find his spots scoring the ball in the two games I’ve seen this year and I thought he could get overshadowed but so far he’s fine and that is a nice plus for him. – 6 points
Keion Brooks
6’6 – SF – 2019
Brooks is quickly becoming one of the better free throw creators and shooters in the state. He’s not a great ball handler, at least not yet, but he’s able to just get far enough in to create the foul. He doesn’t miss much from the free throw line and that helps to pad his point total. His jump shooting is still hit or miss. Sometimes he looks really good and in rhythm and other times you can catch an air ball. Just maturity but as he grows that will get out of his system. – 12 points
Juan Quarles
6’1 – SG – 2017
Been impressed with Quarles the last two times I’ve seen him and I can’t say that I was before. He’s been really effective. How Johnson has found his spots well and not been overshadowed, Juan has been even more impressive. He’s not what I would qualify as a point guard, at least not at the level he’ll be recruited, but as a two guard, he can bring a lot of weapons. Was really good as a shooter last game. This game it was more of his open court vision and scoring that caught my eye. Slick guard that can get buckets in bunches. – 13 points
Chris Hill
6’6 – SF – 2016
Hill was the second best player today and really only played within his role, just did it so well that he looked great. His role right now is shooter in the corner and every so often come out and curl in at the top of the key. He hit a pair of threes early in the game in the corner and then another jumper in the corner in the third. Isn’t a guy you want handling the ball a ton but in the right matchup he can make a play. Could draw nice mismatches in college as he can play the 3/4. He’s long and strong and athletic as he had a solid transition dunk. Looks like he could be a steal at a non-DI program looking to play a fast paced game. – 14 points
Portage:
Tyler Meux
6’1 – SG – 2017
Tyler is a well-built guard who loves to back down his way into the paint. He’s so strong that he does well against North’s forwards as he can get better position and muscle them out of the way and finish with the finesse. He was about the only guy that found success for Portage in this game. Not a big shooter, at least didn’t show it in this game, with everything coming at the free throw lane or the rim. Lefty shooter who good form. – 13 points
