Continue ReadingSpringfield Lanphier 2016 point guard Xavier Bishop is off to a great start to his senior season. What the 5’9” guard does on the high school level is something special to watch. Bishop is quick and shifty with the rock in his hands. He looks to score and boy can he. The senior loves the step back three and mid-range game. Also moves well without the ball to get open coming off screens and is ready to shoot as soon as it touches his hands. His speed getting to the hoop is on full display when getting in the lane finishing with a variety of scoop shots and runners. More of a scorer than distributor at this stage. Getting others involved is an area he will have to prove to coaches at the next level he can do on a night in and night out basis.
Bishop discussed his Springfield Lanphier team this year and his role on the team.
“The team is coming together real good. We are focusing in on our defense. We have a lot of skilled guards. A lot of young guys. I am the leader on the team. I have to step up vocally and lead by example. I think our chemistry is going real good right now. We are bringing a lot back from last year and our bigs are good for us.”
In July Bishop ran with Team Rose on the travel team circuit.
“July went real good. I was bruised up a little with a bad ankle. It went good though. Playing with those guys up there you have to get to it. It is grind it out basketball. Up and down and tough basketball. That is one thing that helped me playing with them. Playing gritty basketball and my defense. Up in Chicago you have to play defense. That helped me a lot.”
Where does his recruitment stand?
“UC Davis is on me pretty hard. IUPUI. That is really about it right now. A couple of schools have called Coach Blake.”
He talked about IUPUI.
“I heard that George Hill played there. Last year’s draft showed that you can get to the highest level from any school. That is my biggest goal.”
Cal Davis is intriguing to him as well.
“Being out in California is pretty neat. Growing up in the Midwest you aren’t used to really sunny days, but out there it is always hot. They actually had a great record last year and won the Big West. That shows they are a winning program and they develop their players.”
What is his timeframe for a college commitment?
“I don’t really have a timetable. I am just looking for the right school to come. I think it will be a decision on what my parents think and mainly what I think because it is my decision. Also what Coach Blake and the staff thinks. I want to go somewhere where I feel comfortable and where they really want to develop me and education is important.”
Look for Bishop to take some potential visits during the season in January.
