Vernon product is making an instant impact as a freshman for OCC. The 6’5” small forward made a living off back cuts scoring at the hoop. Nelson played mostly inside and was always around the ball making plays when we saw him early in the season. He does the little things well. Defends, rebounds, sound passer, and plays with a motor. Can hit 15 foot jumper. Will need to continue to add strength and improve on his free throw shooting going forward. Has the potential down the line to be a D1 recruit.
How is it going early on at OCC?
“I like it a lot. I like the coach when I was getting recruited by him. They have helped me get better and pushed me every day. Coming to college I knew I was going to get pushed, but they have pushed me hard. I knew I wanted this from day one since I was a little kid so I really like it here.”
He talked about where his game has improved the most since his high school season last year.
“I am more aggressive. When I first got here there were times where I was getting bumped around and stuff. I feel that I have to be more aggressive and that has really helped me. Coach has done a great job with that. I feel like my shot has gotten a little better in the mid-range.”
Nelson knows what his role is on the team and relishes it!
“Defense first. I love defense. I feel my offense will come. If I do good on defense my offense will come. I will be able to score and do what I can out of the offense, but defense leads to offense and wins games.”
