Owens knows the offense inside and out as he has been the man at the point for four seasons. He has a tremendous feel for the position along with knowing when and how to make the correct play. The high IQ point guard gets in the lane consistently with his quickness off the dribble and has the vision to find shooters, cutters, and his big men inside. Speed in the open floor also creates opportunities for himself and others. Owens hits acrobatic shots in the lane and isn’t afraid to mix it up inside despite his size. Defensively he is a pest at the point of attack with active hands causing turnovers and havoc. Needs to be looked at by D2 programs!
We spoke with him recently about the start to his final high school season.
“We are a developing team. We have three sophomores that we hope to come in the game and provide for us. We have me, Tyriq (Billberry), and Dawson Berry as our main scorers. I am a pass first point guard that is unselfish and looks to set up for my teammates.”
Owens and fellow senior Tyriq Billberry have been around a while and now it is their team.
“Coach wants us to be more scorers. Obviously last year I was still a little timid coming from my sophomore year. Junior year built that up. Now senior year I know I have to be the guy. Me and Tyriq have been playing together for so long. We have to click together and provide for our team because that is the only way we can win. Play together as a team and get buckets.”
What’s going on with recruiting?
“A few D3 schools. I took a visit to Elmhurst College back in the fall. It is a pretty good school. They are pretty interested in me. The want me bad. They said if I come they want me to play. I like that, but I want to wait until the end of my senior year because I don’t have anything shaking right now. So I want to weigh out my options.”
