Rockville senior Ben Wiebusch has been identified by area college programs as a Division II level guard, but he may have other plans.
He holds no offers as of now, and though he’s seeing D2 and Division III interest, Wiebusch feels a year of prep school may be his best option.
“Mostly I’ve been hearing from D3 schools and a couple of D2 schools. I have Catholic University (of America), York College (PA), Hood College, Ridgewater (MN), Pfeiffer (NC), Mount Olive (NC), Marymount University (VA), Southern Vermont University, and Goucher. I’m also thinking about a prep year,” said Wiebusch, who explained why prep school intrigues him.
“I like the idea of prep school because I think it could get me ready for college, and especially get my body better. I’ll see how this season goes and after I’ll make a decision on what would be best for me to thrive as a player.”
The 6-foot guard described his playing style to PHM.
“My strength is probably shooting the ball, shooting off the dribble and spotting up. Initially I like to create for others, but if I’m open for a shot I’ll take it. And I feel by me scoring that helps open up opportunities for my teammates,” said Wiebusch.
“I need to work on my defense and staying in front of my man, and locking him down. I’ve seen some improvement there, I’ve been more aggressive defensively, and I’ve gotten my legs a lot stronger this offseason which has helped a lot.”
The talented senior has recently started his fourth season playing with the varsity, and his third year starting. He averaged 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game last season a junior.
“The team goes as I go, so I need to come out and bring energy,” said Wiebusch. “I need to get everyone involved and I’ll need to score for us to win ball games. I just need to bring energy and be a leader out there on the court.”
