–Class 1A state champion New Town, from Baltimore County, scored a big victory over Calvert Hall in a battle of public and private school teams Monday.
New Town scored a 61-54 victory over Calvert Hall Monday, according to The Baltimore Sun. The Titans are ranked No. 2 by The Sun and the publication said Matthew Johnson scored 20 points with 14 each from Devin Smith and Christopher Fitzgerald.
The victory improved New Town to 5-0 this season, Justin Gorham topped Calvert Hall with 17 points. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 7-3.
The Sun reported that the Titans ended the game by scoring 10 of the game’s last 12 points.
Another defending champion also pulled out a tough victory on Monday night at home. Oakland Mills, who won the Class 2A title, held on for a 91-85 victory over Hammond in a Howard County match-up, according to The Baltimore Sun
Oakland Mills, now 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the county appeared to be running away with the game when it took a big second-half lead of 29 points. But Hammond (5-1, 5-1) sliced that to two in the final quarter before the Scorpions settled down.
The Sun reported that Naquan Williams-Day led the winners with 31 while Daniel Kiely pitched in with 27.
Brandon Willis topped Hammond with 33 points.
