It was fairly clear from the opening tip — literally — that Mounds View was overmatched physically. A tip from Gus Farrell went straight to Mahtomedi’s Parker Fox, and he dunked with ease. From there, Maht pieced together several runs and got ahead by double digits. The Zephyrs pushed out to a 38-25 halftime lead shooting 55%, and Fox had tallied 16 points by the break, including several dunks.
Mounds View rips off a nice 7-2 run to open the second half, and a 3 from Albers brought a Maht timeout. Continual pressure and made shots resulted in MV trimming the deficit to five, 44-39. A Tyler Fairchild 3-pointer, his first make of the game, tied things at 50-50. The two teams trade 3s, and we’ve got ourselves a much better game. The refs assess a tech to the MV bench, and the parents nearly erupt. MV gets a 60-59 lead, their first since being down by 18, after Thompson finds Skwarek down low with two minutes left. Thompson makes two FT the next time down, Fox airballs a 3, and Albers heads to the line, building on the lead. A couple more transition buckets from MV complete Mahtomedi’s collapse; it’s a 68-64 final.
Player Notes
Parker Fox, Mahtomedi — 6-foot-5 junior with a lot of bounce and potential. Ripped off two or three dunks in the game’s opening 10 minutes or so, showing a good feel for leaking out and taking advantage. Got a good amount of buckets near the hoop as well, getting his hands dirty. Could use some coaching on his long-distance jumper, as a couple 3-pointers looked a bit wild. Finished with 22 points after a frustrating second half.
Nate Albers, Mounds View — The Mustangs’ senior Mr. Do-It-All, Albers is who they lean on. He logged 11 points in the first half but largely struggled to find an open look. Opened up his offense in the second half and was big for MV, totaling 27 points and 5 rebounds.
Gus Farrell, Mahtomedi — 6-foot-4 bruising senior who could make a decent MIAC post. You have to wonder if he’s a football kid? Great power dribble and can run the floor. Good block at the end of the first half, sat for much of the second.
Nick McMillan, Mounds View — Interesting junior who logged 8 points in the first half and played a big part in some second-half runs. Nailed a crucial three to get MV within 3. He plays a lot like Albers in that he’s shifty and a bit unassuming until he kills you with his jumper. Ended with 15 pts.
Jacob Martin, Mahtomedi — 6-4 senior who popped a few threes to reach 10 points by half. Logged another big one from deep in the second half to give Maht a little more cushion.
Zeke Thompson, Mounds View — Senior with a nice ability to turn the corner with the basketball. Controlled, deliberate ball-handling as well. Drew a couple big shooting fouls in the closing minutes to get to the line for MV. Fun crossover stuff as well, and came up huge in the closing minutes with his defensive pressure. 9 total pts.
Joe Rock, Mahtomedi — Tough, competitive senior guard who does little (but important) things to help Mahtomedi. Nailed a corner 3 in the second half to try and fight off the Mustangs comeback.
