SG Skyler Nash (Riverside Brookfield – 2016)
Nash walked past me on press row in the second half and said “I’m Back!” Yes he is! After a summer where he faced serious health issues and then a transfer to Riverside Brookfield he is back on the court and showing the potential that has always been there. Nash is a chiseled 6’5” wing with tremendous strength and athleticism. He used that a couple times around the rim. Nash was most effective using his jump shot which looked the best we have ever seen it. He gets elevation and arc. They were raining in from three! He had 16 points including four triples. If Nash continues to play like this he will be one of the more coveted uncommitted prospects down the home stretch.
PF Lorenzo Edwards (Lake Forest – 2016)
At 6’7” Edwards has a lot of intriguing tools. His strength allows him to play physical around the hoop while he maintains a feel for scoring on the block. Edwards can score with his back to the basket, facing up, and even hitting a mid-range jumper on occasion. He backs his man in getting deep position and then scores through them. Defensively he is a sound post defender and clears the glass at a high rate. Edwards had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Needs to be on mid-major’s priority lists as one of the best uncommitted prospects in Illinois.
C Barret Benson (Hinsdale South – 2016)
The Northwestern commit had several standout moments! The first came when the 6’11” center picked the pocket of his opponent, crossed him over when the defender was backpedalling, and then dunked on him. Late in the game he hit the game winning shot at the buzzer to give Hinsdale South the W. The big bodied post is a space eater on the interior that is consistently double and tripled teamed. His skill and passing ability allow him to be effective scoring and finding open teammates. He showed several nice post moves throughout the game. The senior had 24 points and 9 rebounds. Top 5 prospect in the senior class.
SG George Wilborn (De La Salle – 2016)
Wilborn started the day off in style at the Tosh Tournament. The 6’4” shooting guard came out aggressive and looking to score. His combination of strength, quickness, and athleticism allows him to consistently win off the bounce getting to the hoop where he has a good feel finishing through contact. Clean looking jumper with elevation and can hit a three every now and then. Wilborn is an effective offensive rebounder that crashes for second chance opportunities. He accelerates with the ball in his hands and is a quality transition player pushing it passed his opponents. He had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Needs to be on the low-major D1 radar!
G Zak Razik (Sandburg – 2016)
Razik is a 6’1” combo guard that is very strong in his upper body. He plays with flare and is crafty with the ball in his hands. He takes sharp angles when getting in the lane to score and can finish with acrobatic layups in the paint. The tough guard has a nose for the basketball and also moves well away from the ball. Flashed ability to hit a three. The lefty is an exciting passer that puts zip on his dishes. He went for 16 points. Worth consideration at the D3 level.
SF Jared Murphy (Rolling Meadows – 2017)
At 6’4” Murphy showed his complete offensive arsenal against TF South. Murphy has size and is a plus shooter from deep. He has range out to three, but was most effective attacking off the bounce showing improved quickness and athleticism. He scores well in the lane finishing through defenders and also gets to the charity stripe. Murphy went for 25 points and 8 rebounds including four offensive boards. Potential low-major prospect that right now is probably more D2.
PG Jake Schutter (Providence – 2017)
Providence Catholic’s 6’1” junior point guard had quite the game! He has decent length and plays with a motor. Schutter is strong with the ball in his hands and makes plays! He is an efficient scorer. The junior has range on his shot to well beyond the three point arc and is pretty consistent with his mechanics and accuracy. He is effective getting in the lane with his handles where he finishes or gets to the charity stripe. The guard makes a high amount of trips to the foul line. Solid rebounder and passer, but is a scoring lead guard first. He had 25 points (8-15 FG). Need to continue to monitor this junior that plays with swagger.
SG Rowan McGowen (Wheaton North – 2017)
This 6’5” shooting guard has been putting up some significant numbers early in the season and that continued when we saw him. McGowen has quality size for position and an above average skill with his perimeter shooting. He loves to let it fly in the catch and shoot. The guard shows deep range. Shot release could start a bit higher, but it is effective. Moves well without the ball to get open on flares and curling off screens. Needs to improve his ability to create own shot. He had 18 points.
