Basha
No Klay Stall? No problem. The #7 team in our Preseason Top 25 is proving themselves worthy of a higher rating, starting the season off at 8-0 with three Top 25 wins, most notably against #3 Mesa Mountain View who has had a strong start themselves.
Corona del Sol
After falling to Mesa in their season opener the Aztecs bounced back strong, picking up a series of wins in the process. Most recently they secured a victory against westcoast powerhouse Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) behind the play of 6’2” junior Saben Lee.
Mesa
There is no team in the state hotter than Mesa right now. While the games aren’t always pretty, the Thunderbirds are always in control and have had a positive result in each of their eight outings. The east valley power has beaten five teams in our Preseason Top 25 (#4 Corona del Sol, #10 Horizon, #12 Pinnacle, #15 Highland, and #18 Gilbert) despite not being included.
Mountain Ridge
The Mountain Lions have had a very strong start to their season in large part due to the play of the Green brothers—Jay (2016) and Josh (2019). The Glendale based school currently sports a 5-1 record after splitting games with Highland who was the #15 ranked team in our Preseason Top 25.
Shadow Mountain
If this past weekend taught us anything it is that Shadow Mountain is the real deal and every bit as capable of capturing another state title. Though there was a controversial finish that didn’t go Shadow’s way there is no denying that they currently stand as the top team in the state, falling to national powerhouse Findlay Prep in the final seconds of their contest. The Matadors currently stand 5-1 and, looking at their schedule, it is not completely foolish to question whether they may finish the year unblemished against Arizona teams.
