Robinson vs. Anacostia, 1 p.m.
Robinson (VA): The Rams enter this game with a 2-5 record, but have played a very tough schedule thus far. Junior guard Markos Eyob is their leading scorer this year; he’s averaging 15 points per game while earning 7+ foul shot attempts in each contest. His back-court mate, fellow junior Kaleb Hailu has scored in double-figures three separate times for the Rams. Junior Guard Luke Ferguson, and senior forwards Danny Krug and Avi Silberman provide balance and experience for Rams Head Coach Brian Nelson.
Anacostia (DC): The Indians are 4-4 heading into their match-up with Robinson today. They’re paced by 6-foot-3 junior guard Alvin Cox, who dropped 36 points in their last game against Fairmont Heights. 6’2″ senior guard Patric Kelly is the team’s second leading scorer, and should offer good support for Cox.
Key Match-Up:
Danny Krug vs. Alvin Cox. Should the Rams decide to match-up, Krug will likely be assigned to Cox. Danny is a smart player, particularly on the defensive end. At 6’2″, he good size to be able to conted with Cox. Although it’ll likely take a team effort to slow down Alvin, Krug’s efforts should not go unnoticed.
Top Prospects:
Robinson: Markos Eyob (6′, Jr., G)
Anacosita: Alvin Cox (6’3″, Jr., G)
West Potomac vs. Bishop Ireton, 2:45 p.m.
West Potomac (VA): The Wolverines enter this match-up with a 2-4 overall record. Junior guard Khalil Williams has notched double-figure scoring numbers in all-but one game thus far, including a season-high 23 against Hayfield. Look for frosh guard Daryl Mackey Jr. to make some cameos in the back-court as well.
Bishop Ireton (VA): The Cardinals are 3-7 heading into this fixture, but have played a very tough schedule. In their last match-up against fellow WCAC member Paul VI, they more than held their own, nearly pulling off an upset behind a well balanced scoring attack. Senior guard Nicholas Schmelzer can really shoot the ball from the perimeter. Look for junior guard Jamie Pasha, and sophomore guard Darius Hines to make their mark as well.
Key Match-Up:
Daryl Mackey Jr. vs. Darius Hines. A major task for the Wolverines today will be trying to limit Darius Hines’ dribble penetration. The Cardinal’s sophomore floor general is crafty, fast, and exhibits a tight handle. He’s a reliable and heady point guard who loves to distribute to his teammates. If the Wolverines are able to limit Hines’ production, they have a chance to succeed.
Top Prospects:
West Potomac: Jamie Sara (6’4″, Sr., F); Khalil Williams Diggins (6′, Jr., G); Da’Jon Bellfield (6’3″, Jr., F); Daryl Mackey Jr. (5’9″, Fr., G)
Bishop Ireton: Nicholas Schmelzer (6′, Sr., G); Jamie Pasha (6’3″, Jr., G); Arminas Kleisys (6’8″, Jr., C); Chandler Hill (6’6″, Jr., F); Darius Hines (5’11”, So., G); Ethan Lynch (6’2″, Fr., G)
Annandale vs. Mason Ridgeland, 4:30 p.m.
Annandale (VA): The Atoms are 2-5 on the young season. They’re led by a scrappy group of guards: Dontae Johnson, Jordan Adams, and Mathew McKiver. McKiver and Johnson combined for 42 of the Atoms 49 points in their last game, a 5-point loss against West Springfield. Dini Mahmoud, Andrew Ours, and Ty-ree Anderson are all hustle guys who should contribute in peripheral categories.
Madison Ridgeland (MS): Madison Ridgeland Academy of Mississippi will travel to Virginia and participate in the opening round against Annandale. 6’7″ junior SF Devin Gillmore is a match-up problem on the perimeter because of his mixture of athleticism, length, and skill. Look for him to be the go-to guy.
Key Match-Up:
Devin Gilmore vs. Dini Mahmoud. Mahmoud may be the only player besides Ty-ree Anderson on the Atoms roster who can contend with Gilmore’s athleticism and size. Dini is the heart and soul of Annandale, and plays with tremendous energy and passion. Look for him to remain aggressive and tenacious in this match-up.
Top Prospects:
Annandale: Dini Mahmoud (6’5″, Sr., PF); Dontae Johnson (5’11”, Jr., G); Jordan Adams (6′, Jr., G); Mathew McKiver (5’11”, So., G); Ty-ree Anderson (6’5″, So., PF)
Madison Ridgeland: Austin Waldrop (6’2″, Sr., G); Clint Moses (6’2″, Sr., PG); Devin Gilmore (6’7″, Jr., SF); Henri Borne (6’3″, Jr., G); Braxton Eubanks (6’3″, So., G); LiLewis Davis (6’4″, So., G)
Wakefield vs. Washington-Lee, 6:15 p.m.
Wakefield (VA): After their recent victory over VA Academy, the Warriors enter this contest at 8-0. Tony Bentley’s bunch is an extremely deep and talented team, led by seniors Deng Nhial, Eric Martin, and Xavier Adams. Junior guard Alan Treakle has scored 35 points in a game already. With the recent addition of former Washington-Lee stand-out Halil Parks, the Wakefield scoring attack is as balanced as ever.
Washington-Lee (VA): The Generals are 4-3 overall. They enter this match-up with just one loss (Langley) in their last 5 games. Look for senior guards Chris Ozgo and Gene Jones to provide a majority of their scoring.
Key Match-Up:
Halil Parks Jr. vs. Gene Jones. Parks is an explosive guard, who can light it up on any given night. Given the fact that he played for the Generals last year, he’ll likely be heading into this one with a little extra motivation.
Top Prospects:
Wakefield: Deng Nhial (6’4″, Sr., F); Xavier Adams (6’2″, Sr., G); Eric Martin (5’8″, Sr., G); Alan Treakle (5’9″, Jr., G); Halil Parks Jr. (6’2″, Jr., G); Amari Cooper (6’3″, So., F); Ben Horsford (5’11”, So., G); Mahmoud Eltaher (6’6″, So., PF)
Washington-Lee: Chris Ozgo (5’7″, Sr., G); Gene Jones (5’11”, Sr., G)
