Recruiting Report: Buzz Anthony (2017)
November 25, 2015
After a summer on the EYBL circuit with Maryland 3D, Buzz Anthony’s recruitment went from zero to plenty, quick.
“It picked up quite a bit, it’s nice to see that my work has paid off,” said the 5-foot-10 junior guard.
The Archbishop Spalding product mentioned a bevy of Division I through Division III schools have been in contact with him, including; Lycoming (PA), Randolph-Macon (VA), American University, Mount St. Mary’s, Southern Maryland, Salisbury, and St. Thomas Aquinas (NY).
“Definitely a lot more interest over the summer, so I was very happy with that,” he said.
Anthony says Randolph-Macon has been in contact the most, and he’ll visit there on Jan. 9 to catch a game.
He’s hoping to attract the attention of some additional Division I schools before the end of his junior season. But ultimately just wants a school that wants him and which can challenge him academically.
“Since the basketball stuff stopped in July I’ve been working my butt off trying to get everything right for high school ball,” said Anthony. “And academics are very important to me, I have a 4.33 GPA, I’m really hoping I can get a Division I school to take a chance on me, because I know I’m the guy that if they take a chance on me, I’ll pay them back with more than what they expected.”
The exposure he received while playing with Maryland 3D was not only beneficial to his recruitment, but his leadership ability too.
“I kind of took the role and did whatever needed to be done for the team, I learned a lot for my coach about leading and how it’s not always about scoring, but there’s a lot of other things to expect from true leaders,” said Anthony. “And I was always working on my jump shot, last season I was a drive-first kind of guy, and I wanted to really develop a jump shot — I got up around 200-300 shots every morning.”
With his junior season ahead of him, the 5-foot-10 guard is ready to take the leadership he honed this summer and and use it to take charge of the Cavaliers.
“I’m going to really have to lead with my game experience, and learn which guys to get into to get them going, and which guys to pat on the back,” said Anthony. “And offensively I want to be one of the go-to guys in production – I just need to step up offensively and defensively, and just lead everyone.”

Just finishing up his sophomore season at Archbishop Spalding, Buzz Anthony has a lot to be excited about.
After starting all season for the Cavaliers, he’s now playing with an EYBL, Nike sponsored Maryland 3D team during his 16U season.
The 5-foot-10 prospect is hoping between the experience and exposure, his recruitment will get off the ground.
“It (recruitment) has not started for me, I’ve had a couple of D3 coaches come up to me and share some words and tell me they liked how I played, and they’d stay in touch, but nothing has been serious or anything,” said Anthony.
“I was talked to by St. Mary’s in southern Maryland, Messiah College in Pennsylvania and Cabrini College in Pennsylvania.”
Though he considers himself more of a distributor than a scorer, he says he really had to up his scoring during his sophomore season.
“I ended up starting every game this season, we didn’t have a lot of size and every game I was trying to learn more about scoring. Even though I’m a pass-first point guard, there was a lot more scoring I had to put on my shoulders,” said Anthony, who averaged 9.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game during his sophomore season.
“I gained a lot in the season experience-wise and I think that will really help in the coming years.”
This offseason, while playing on the EYBL circuit with Maryland 3D, Anthony says his shooting has noticeably improved, and he sees himself becoming a better leader.
“I’m getting a lot of shots up, my 3-point shooting has expanded a lot, I’m starting to become more of a threat on the outside and since the high school season I’ve become a pretty good leader — I’m very vocal,” said Anthony.
“I’m just hoping to really just get my name out there, we got this EYBL team now, and now that we are Nike, a lot more people will be drawn to come out. I just hope coaches see in me what I’m able to provide and I hope I can start talking to people and seeing interest and then they can come watch me in the high school season.”
