Adam Geiger was the third leading scorer and the third rebounding last year on the best team in state.
At Bismarck Century this year he will again pair with Dalton Feeney to make one of the toughest forward duos not just in North Dakota, but few in the surrounding states can match their toughness either.
Adam is one of these guys that can take on just about any role his coach needs him to. It’s exactly why the University of Mary offered him a scholarship.
If Adam does play for the Marauders in the NSIC or any other college program he will be a tough guy defender, rebounder, do some of everything type player.
That was his role this spring and summer for ECI and Adam’s game expanded greatly as he enters his senior year.
“My last season with ECI was a lot of fun and I couldn't have played with better coaches and players,” Adam told PHD.
“I think it helped me learn how to communicate on the court better, and I learned how to better accept my role on a team of great players.”
Yes Adam has the exact attitude that just about every coach wants. Head Coach Darin Mattern will benefit this year as returning talent Sam Liedholm, Luke Leinlang, Deeney, Lucas Meyer, Naye Symens, and other return for a contending team.
“Things are looking pretty good! We always expect a lot at Century. We hope to win it this year.”
A year ago they were two points away. Adam’s all around play could be the difference in a two point win this March.
May 29th Update
Adam Geiger, a 6-foot-4 forward, is one of these players that is the unusual combination of not only being pound for pound one of the toughest players on the floor, he’s also one of the most intelligent.
This winter Geiger helped his team to second place in state leading the WDA in shooting 51 percent from the arc plus he made 49 percent of his field goals overall.
Dalton Feeney and Riley Henderson rightfully grabbed a lot of the attention but Adam helped out with a key ten points and five boards a game while doing everything he was asked to while rarely turning the ball over.
Now he’s brought that same role to the ECI Prospects who had some early year slip ups but have balanced things out winning five of five games in their own event a few weeks ago. ECI has evened out their record and their 11 wins is more than any team in the PHD landscape.
“The season with ECI has gone really well,” Adam said. “I've had a lot of fun with my teammates and coaches.
“I'd like to see our team still finish in the top half of the Sanford League and win most of our games. We have better chemistry than we did before.”
ECI is currently 3-7 with three games left to play in the SPTS before bracket play. To make the championship bracket at the Pentagon, ECI needs to win two of three games in July.
Two of the games are against Schoolers Daly and the Minnesota Comets who are also fighting for the final spots in the top eight. The other game is against the Minnesota Heat who is in 4th place at 7-3.
Is it doable for ECI? Certainly. Beating Schoolers Daly and Comets Lewis would likely knock out two of the teams they need to remove from contention. The road will be tough though.
If ECI is looking for a leader to follow into those battles, Geiger is the guy to do it. Adam wants to play college basketball so there are things he is focused on improving.
“I want to improve my on ball defense and dribbling skills so I can play at the next level,” Adam explained. “I feel I've gotten better at getting to the rim and finishing. I'm trying to work on my ball handling and strength right now.”
Geiger’s goal of playing college basketball is off to a decent start. A couple area schools are talking to him and the local NAIA programs really haven’t started recruiting this class yet. When the NorthStar Conference gets going with recruiting, you can be sure that they will be all over him as well.
“Concordia College talks to me and I got a call from the University of Mary,” said Geiger.
