While it will be tough to dethrone reigning state champs Henrico, who both lose and return some key additions from last season, the likes of LC Bird, Green Run, Kecoughtan, Deep Run, Salem, Norview, Bethel and Varina are all deep and talented teams that could compete with anyone on any given day. It was tough to do, but here’s who we chose for the Preseason 5A South Team.
MVP: De’Monte Buckingham; Senior G/F; Henrico
The University of Richmond commit has solidified himself as not just one of the most productive, but one of the winningest players in Henrico history. Buckingham, who averaged 21 points and 9 rebounds per game last season, will look to go out on top and solidify his legacy with another trip to the state tournament, which would be his third in as many seasons. With the loss of key players Ryan Pearson and Walter Williams to graduation, the senior will have to carry even more of a load while keeping everyone involved and leading them to the promise land.
