Semaj Matthews is a 2018 prospect who stands six foot five and plays his school ball with Landry-Walker. For the summer, he plays with New Orleans Elite 15u on the Adidas Circuit. The big man should be a key reserve for Landry-Walker as they look to win their third straight title.
On the offensive end he stay about 15 foot and in and is adept at playing in the high or low post. He’s got a nice footwork and a couple moves in the post and can hit short jumpers. He admits that, “my weakness is my shooting.”
As the season approaches he wants to continue working on his footwork and of course improve hit shooting. Matthews is very strong in the lower body and holds up well when battling in the post. This makes him a great rebounder and someone who can block shots as the primary or help defender.
His goal is simply to win another state championship this coming season. He understands his role next year will be as a rebounder and shot blocker. College coaches have already begun to notice his ability.
Semaj has heard from Louisiana Tech and Northwestern State and we suspect as his game matures, other coaches will begin to take notice as well. If he can extend his range on his jumper and continues to grow, he’ll be an interesting prospect for sure.
Matthews currently has a 2.9 GPA and hasn’t taken the ACT yet which is just fine as a sophomore. He played very well at the Prep Hoops Louisiana Camp in August and was a handful for anyone trying to defend him.
