Jared Martinson is loving football right now as a Maple Grove senior tight end. But don't let that fool you… he's a hoops kid through and through.
“I'm more into basketball,” Martinson told NHR. “I like it more. But this fall I've been a pass-catcher for Maple Grove at the tight end spot… I'm about 6-5, 210 lbs… I have good footwork and angles which makes up for lack of size.”
Although Maple Grove's basketball lineup will have a lot of familiar faces this winter (Reed Nikko, Brad Davison, Jack Hutchinson, Tywhon Pickford in addition to Martinson), they added senior transfer Taron Pickford (Tywhon's cousin). They will also be playing in a new gym that just finished construction.
If Martinson doesn't start next to Nikko, he'll still play a good role as an energy guy off the bench. He's also got a great team outlook, and he says the expectations are high. Expect to see Division III programs in the stands for Martinson's games this winter.
“I've been in contact with Northwestern-St. Paul the most, and I'm talking to Bethel, Gustavus, St. Scholastica and Wartburg a lot. I've already been to Bethel and Gustavus, and I went to the Northwestern football game on Saturday.”
On the Northwestern visit: “I played open gym with their guys, that was really fun. I went on a tour and I liked the feel of the campus, especially since there were students around and it gave me a glimpse of student life. Then that night we went to the football game and they won, so that was a great event.”
Update from 6/4/15 by Alex Conover
Jared Martinson, a 6-5 Maple Grove/Heat forward, is committed to elevating his team no matter what. Whether that’s on the hardwood or on the bench providing noise, NHR supports that kind of outlook.
“My junior high school season was a blast,” Jared said. “I got decent minutes off the bench and I had a lot of fun. I'm known as the bench leader on my team, always picking guys up and getting the crowd involved… I have so much passion for this game, and I want to affect it even if I'm not on the floor.”
Coming off a solid varsity season, Jared joined Heat Schumann and is enjoying his first year of grassroots play.
“I got connected with Willie Vang and the Heat, and I'm very happy with how that has worked out,” Jared said. “My team has been solid all season. And I feel I've played really well in an expanded role, differently from what I did during the high school season. That should make me more ready for new challenges in my senior year.”
Martinson has heard from Bethel, Gustavus, Lawrence, Saint Mary’s and Scholastica, with the former three contacting him the most. He grabbed a camp invite from Concordia-St. Paul, but he’s unable to attend; instead, he’ll be headed to team camps at UNI and the University of Minnesota.
We’ve got our eyes on Jared, and it’s likely that he breaks anywhere between the NHR top 100-200, if not higher. With his frame, it’s likely he becomes an even more coveted D3 prospect as more coaches see him play.
