Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Ahrens had a huge game for the host Vikings in their opening game against West Valley. He was solid in the first half with 10 points but exploded in the third quarter with 14 of his team-high 27 points. He’s an athletic wing who is vital to Curtis’ game plan. He can operate along the perimeter and knock down some outside shots, but he’s most impactful from the middle, hitting those short to midrange jumpers and facilitating/attacking from the heart of the defense.

. That puts a lot more emphasis and importance on the skills Ahrens brings to the floor. He’s a poised player who can operate out of different spots on the floor, playing on the perimeter, at the high post, and moving block to block. And while he’s a solid athlete and plays tough inside, it’s been his shooting touch that has really impressed me. He does a great job turning and facing, can hit jumpers consistently from the midrange, and can stretch out to three at times. And he’s been composed on drives, showing the touch to pull up short or decelerate and gather himself in space.

Ahrens returns to start for Curtis for his fourth straight season next winter. He’ll be a senior when the 2024-25 season starts and will most certainly be one of the key leaders on this team. He plays big inside and showed over the weekend how impactful he can be operating from the high post. He knocked down several turn and shoot looks from the elbows, showed some good vision to switch the ball or find teammates by the hoop, and can put it on the floor and use some strength to get to the cup.

Probably this most underrated guy on the 4A champions, Ahrens is an athletic forward who plays above his weight class to be a key player inside for the Vikings. He is an outstanding defender who can matchup with almost every position and works his tail off to be in the right spots on both ends of the floor. He started to show some glimpses of an expanded offensive game as well and could turn into a reliable shooter from outside that spaces the floor against opposing bigs.

Here’s another kid who has found his way into the starting lineup more often than not. Ahrens has taken on the big man role for the undersized Curtis squad and has played some big minutes solidifying the interior for a team hoping to return to the 4A title game. He’s a hard worker and makes life tough for bigger guys inside with his tenacity on the glass and ability to draw charges. He knows his role right now but still has some room to grow and shows that potential when he steps out to nail down the occasional shot from downtown.
