Young entered high school with an advanced skillset as a shooter and passer, which led to instant individual success with big time scoring games. And leading Heritage Hall to their first State Tournament since 2022. While there were high points during his season, he also had the typical roller coaster moments that come with youthful growing pains. There are times his shot selection could be better, but when he’s ON the aspects of his game that could one day make him a professional scorer are very apparent.
One trait that could help Young separate at a national level is his eye for passing. Once or twice a game he’ll make a transition pass or a crosscourt find in the halfcourt that simply few players can make or even see. Continuing to refine those skills and improving his decision making between scorer and passer will be crucial for Young to continue to ascend.

After being the hero in punching Hall’s ticket to State, the freshman could not find his rhythm on Wednesday night. He struggled as a shooter. But the shots he did hit and some of the passes he made are hints at his potential future. Because they are the type of fluid moves and creative vision that can separate him from the rest of the class. It’s a setback to end his freshman campaign, while the story is still to be told.

The freshman has an impressive highs this season and Friday night might’ve been the highest. Even on a team filled with talented juniors, it was Young who produced the points to send the Chargers back to the state tournament. He’s been streaky as a shot maker at this year, but when he’s on like Friday night there’s a special feel to his scoring. And now he’s blazing his own path.
For about a decade, the Chargers were a main stay in the State Tournament, but this is the first appearance since 2022. During that previous run, they won the title in 2018 thanks to a freshman named Trey Alexander. It was a stunning upset over a highly regarded Kingfisher team, could lightning strike twice with a new freshman leading the way?

The freshman was a key cog in the comeback victory over Dickson. The Chargers got down big in the first half. Young fueled a momentum change with a block in the second quarter that led to points. From there, Heritage Hall continued to chip away.

helped pull the team back into the game and cut the lead to just a single point in the third quarter. Young took the game over at that point, hitting two fourth quarter 3-pointers. With the lead at 59-58 in favor of the Chargers, Young struck again with a left-handed and-one finish from the baseline. Heritage Hall was able to fend off the Comets to finish this one and escaped with a 73-72 win.

Freshmen are fun to watch, because they have these moments where you can see the player they can potentially become. In a big game on the road, Young had plenty of those moments. Opened his scoring with a three nearly from the Ranger logo on the court. Sees the court fantastically in transition/when bringing it up, and has feathery, accurate touch on his passes. To end the third, he drained a tough three that stopped the bleeding. Had another moment where he chased down an overthrown pass in transition and immediately turned into a midrange jumper. The combination of shooting and passing abilities allow him to already impact the biggest games now. And are great teasers to the type of player Young can be as an upperclassman.

Last but not least in this article is one of the very best freshmen in Oklahoma. Opened the game with a deep three and kept hitting tough jumpers throughout the first half. Displayed great floor vision on one drive where he drew a crowd and threaded the needle with an one the money passer to an open teammate for three. Had some freshman growing pains in an athletic and rough game. But he has an amazing skill and feel foundation as he grows into his body.

Young is a natural fit for a promising Heritage Hall roster. And due to preseason injuries around him, has seen an expanded role. His shooting and passing abilities are the early areas where he stands out. People will notice the shooting first, with bombs from deep and mid-range pull ups. But do not sleep on the creation. He can serve up lobs to athletic teammates and also make the right reads when he drives.
