Gillespie, a junior guard out of Capital Preparatory Magnet School, has established himself as one of the top scorers not just in Connecticut, but in all of New England. The 6’2″ junior recently passed the 1,000-point mark and broke his own single-game school record for points early this year, when he had 53 in win over Prince Tech. He’s now finishing plays above the rim, makes good decisions off the bounce with the ball in his hands, and has the ability to knock down threes from behind the arc off the bounce or in catch and shoot situations. He’s got a quick first step as a driver, finishes with a lot of creativity around the rim, and is a big-time shot maker in isolation situations late in the clock.

Gillespie brings excellent size and length for a point guard, giving him a clear advantage on both ends of the floor. He has a high ceiling and continues to show significant upside as he develops. On offense, he’s a lethal shooter who can stretch the floor and create spacing for his teammates. Additionally, he’s a slashing playmaker, able to attack the rim and set up others effectively.

A scoring lead guard from Connecticut, Gillespie made noise this winter while playing for Capital Prep. He has some real breakdown ability off the bounce, deep range on his jumper, and an impressive array of scoring moves in the paint. Maybe most impressive is his advanced ability to score off the bounce, particularly his touch around the basket with either hand. He does a good job of creating seperation off the bounce, and as such, is able to get his shot off whenever he wants. He’s a competitor on the defensive end of the floor, utilizing quick hands and feet to generate deflections and steals and to turn defense into easy offense.

A true-born shotmaker, Gillespie can score in a huge variety of functional ways. He can drive to the rim using floaters and bank shots to get buckets. Gillespie has a tight handle and isn’t shy to shoot threes in a defender’s face. He can play off the ball too, hitting shots off screens and with some movement. Gillespie can stop and pop in transition and his comfort in taking such an eclectic shot diet is very noteworthy. He can also make some swift passes in transition, finders cutters to the rim. Gillespie’s tough shotmaking package makes him attention-grabbing and should catch more people’s attention in no time.
