Stryckland Whittley-Ligon

Whittley-Ligon was his usual hard-playing self in Sunday’s championship game, but he just didn’t have quite enough help from his teammates. The 6-foot-5 forward showed off his versatility on both ends by knocking down shots from the perimeter and the paint but also by defending all positions effectively. Whittley-Ligon’s physical tools—which help him defend and rebound far better than his height would suggest—should earn him some minutes right away at Wash U in St. Louis next season. Heck of a high school career for a really solid player.

Whittley-Ligon, a senior wing out of the Kingswood-Oxford School in Connecticut, is a fantastic two-way wing that plays with nice combination of athleticism, power, and skill. Kingswood-Oxford currently sits at the top of Class B with a 12-1 record in league games, behind a high scoring offensive attack. At 6’5″, with a strong frame, Whittley-Ligon operates as a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses, capable of punishing smaller defenders around the rim and of taking larger defenders off the bounce on the perimeter. He’s a strong two-way rebound, incredibly switchable defender, and does all the little things that help his team win games. Whittley-Ligon will continue his playing career in the fall at WashU.

Whittley-Ligon was incredibly dominant on Sunday against a talented King School team. The 6-foot-5 forward has a massive upper body and easily shucks defenders off of him in the lane and on drives to the rim. He had multiple above-the-rim plays, including some ferocious slams, but he also does a good job playing beneath the rim and using his strength on drives. Whittley-Ligon tells me he’s been working on his three-point shot, too, and you can tell. His release looks improved and his free throws are consistent. If he can be a knock down shooter, he could be a star for Wash U next season.

While Biggins might be Kingswood Oxford’s best player this year, you can make an argument that Whittley-Ligon is their most important piece. The 6-foot-5 wing is ridiculously versatile; on the defensive end, he can defend wings and guards on the perimeter if he needs to but is also able to use his strength, toughness and jumping ability to contest shots at the rim and defend opposing bigs on switches. Whittley-Ligon is committed to play hoops at Wash U in St. Louis next year, and he’s ready to play physically right now. The man is built in his upper body and knows how to use his physical tools.

Whittley-Ligon was the most physically-ready college basketball player in the gym on Sunday. He has a massive upper body and completely disregards anyone who tries to get in front of him on his way to the rim; this comes in handy for straight line drives and offensive rebounds, where he’s quite effective. Defensively, he’s very versatile because his athleticism allows him to guard ball handlers on the perimeter but his size and strength allows him to guard bigs down low. He needs to refine his skills and improve his feel for the game, but a high level D3 school might take a chance on him even if he doesn’t. Really intriguing prospect.

Whittley-Ligon is a freak of an athlete who looks like a man amongst boys on the basketball court. The 6-foot-5 wing has a college-ready body right now and uses it to completely body defenders on his way to the cup. He also has above-the-rim hops once he touches the paint and is super willing to make kickout passes to his teammates for easy shots. He’s certainly still a bit raw skill wise, but he seems to have the IQ necessary to grow in that area. I would imagine some scholarship coaches will be interested in Whittley-Ligon, but right now he strikes me as more of a D3 player.
