Expert Analysis
Scott Burgess | Prep Hoops Scout
Abaev impressed me last July with his skilled offensive scoring package. He is a lefty wing that has a free and easy release on his perimeter shot. Creative passer that can get a bit wild with it at times, but overall is a fantastic secondary playmaker. Makes plays in transition with his slick handles.

12/27/24: The best player on the floor in Friday’s first quarterfinal contest, Shon Abaev buried deep jumper after deep jumper. Standing 6-foot-7 the lefty was dynamic and confident. He was able to create shots from nothing and release with a clean look at the rim each time.

Abaev is firmly established as one of Florida’s premier prospects, with a polished, Division I-ready game. He thrives both as a scorer and a facilitator, combining sharp court awareness with a dynamic offensive skill set. Abaev keeps defenses on edge with his relentless movement, precise slashing ability, and a consistent three-point stroke that stretches the floor. Beyond scoring, his leadership is palpable—whether it’s directing traffic or setting the tone with hustle plays, Abaev’s two-way impact makes him an anchor for Calvary and a can’t-miss player for high-major programs.

Abaev is on pace to be the next player from Calvary to continue a string of high-level Division 1 players. During the earlier parts of practice, he was more of a lead by example, pushing his teammates in sprints and being first to the floor for loose balls. As the day continued, his vocal side came out as well, directing players where they should be on the floor in a set. Abaev has a smooth all-around game based on him being in constant motion and making reads off defenders. He’s great at slashing to the rim and finishing strong but has a quality three-point shot that can’t be ignored. Abaev also showed high IQ and great court vision during 5 on 5 drills finding teammates in the post and had one three-quarter court pass on point for a layup.

-The offensive bag was on display as Abaev scored at a patient pace from all 3 levels at a 54% clip, using up fakes and footwork to draw fouls on perimeter jumpers to earn trips to the line. He uses his length to hit passing windows around his defenders while taking care of the rock in his drives to the rim. The improvement defensively was noticeable, blocking a shot and collecting 4 steals—the latter leading to buckets at the other end.

The 6-7 junior wing has a smooth skillset where he can play out on the perimeter, as well as in the post. Abaev has impressive footwork, especially in the mid-range where he can score off the bounce as well as the catch. He also has a smooth release where he can get his shot off against bigger players as he displays great length. Defensively, Abaev is an active rebounder who is unafraid when it comes to pushing the pace where he has improved his handle on the basketball. His growth has continued to rise and expected to attract a ton of college coaches’ radars as he can play multiple positions on both ends of the floor.

The 6-7 junior combo guard has been recognized on the national radar since the beginning of his sophomore season. Abaev can create for himself as well as for his teammates as his separation to score on the ball and off the ball have gradually improved each year. The lefty has a smooth shooting stroke where he can also score on all three levels at the offensive end. On the defensive end of the floor, Abaev is the true definition of a floor general where he can guard multiple positions at a high level and plays with huge upside.
