Wegner’s got nice size to be a combo guard at the next level. A very effective shooter who showed that from the start. Opened Friday nights matchup with back-to-back triples. One off the dribble and another in the corner. Passing should not be overlooked. Had a crafty behind-the-back assist in transition shortly after.

Wegner is a solidly built athlete who runs the floor well and had a nice put back on a fast break. He’s a confident ball-handler who can bring it up and will use his good court vision to make passes many players would miss. He can also beat his defender off the dribble and will often kick it to the open shooter in the corner or find a teammate under the basket. He can score too, mostly off the drive, but also in the midrange and beyond the arc. He didn’t shoot from deep often when I was watching but he can hit from that range. On one possession he went to his left and pulled up for a tasty 10-footer. Perhaps he was gassed, but I would have liked to see more on the glass and defensive end.

At 6’4, Samuel is an explosive athlete out on the wing. Running with Wisconsin Blaze Inferno, he was attacking the basket hard, doing a nice job of drawing some fouls in the process. If he gets a clear path to the rim he’s going to look to throw down dunks, and his explosiveness translates to the defensive end as a shot blocker as well. The bulk of his offense in the game I saw came attacking the basket, but he’s capable of rising up for a mid-range jumper when his man sags off.
